"Sick" Communication Posted By: divamommy72

Today our 7 yr old autistic daughter woke up with a fever of 101. This is not the first time that this has happened or the last. Every time she gets really ill she is able to communicate more freely. She asks questions, names things, tells us things and we see a little less echolalia. Has anyone else had this happen? Has anyone talked to a doctor about this? Is there, maybe, a medication that might create the same response. It is so wonderful to hear her communicate with her oldest brother,,,it is still halted and non typical but so much better and less confusing for all involved MOSTLY for her. Any ideas please let me know. I don't want to drug her to the point of making her sludge through her day. And I don't want to put her on stimulants and make her hyperfocused...Just wondering if there were any ways to make this work.

Hi, I have heard of this before. Infact I often say (guiltly) that I enjoy my time with EJ when he is sick. As you said he is more in tune with his communication, he wants me to sit with him and hold him he will start conversations, and hold a conversation for a while. But this is only when he is running a fever. Also he always has gotten very high fevers when he is sick... not sure if or how that may be related. I know that there are some places doing studies on this I believe Penn State Hershey Medical Center on Autism is doing this. ALso my son is on medication he takes Abilify. It helps him a lot, with anxiety, aggression and repedative behaivors (obsessions, compulsion, and stimming) its not perfect he still has symptoms but they are a lot less, his meltdowns have decreased a lot since we started it as well. He is also doing really well in school with the medication. It is not a stimulant. I dont know what type of affect it would have on speech that would be an excelent question for a psychiatrist. hope she feels better.

There was some reasearch suggesting that when an ASD kid runs a fever symptoms of ASD subside. You can google it

I've heard the same about the fever. I do know that Jared seems more relaxed and his words are alot better. I heard that most ASD kids do the same.

Yes my daugther is the same, after the vaccine MMR she become with high fevers and was diagnostic with autism, but at 3 years old We notice, after the fever episode She was more alert, with new skills. We are looking under PANDAS and The relation between Virus,antibiotics,antibodys and neurological conditions.araty
