What is the deal? Posted By: samncaitlyn

Why is it so hard to get services for your child? I heard from several parents who said "You'll have to fight to get your son what he needs". I thought they were just plain wrong. Nope, I WAS wrong. I find that every day I need to wage a war with someone. I'm tired. My house is falling apart, my other kids are not getting the time they need. But on the bright side, my son (will be 4 in 2 months), can now point to his nose, mouth and teeth when asked. I hope when the school district finally agrees to giving him a speech/language pathologist he might say a word. I live for that day!

The IEP Team is no team at all. The sooner you realize that the sooner you will understand how the district works. In our IEPs, the districts' attorney's sat on them. Talk about intimidation. It had no effect on my advocates or myself. The law is the law. I wish you great success with your 4 yr old son. My home was in constant chaos too, but it does get better. Raymond is now 14 and he is doing GREAT!

Yes, you will be exhausted and yes, your house will be in chaos, and yes, you will always be in an us and them battle. But - if you keep working on behalf of your son - in a reasonable and kind way - they will come around! I even volunteered to be PTA President - just so they would take me serious and listen to me. It worked...

If I could give one piece of advice to parents it would be "listen to your gut". No one else on your team knows your child like you do, and no one else will be around for him when he is older like you will. Be respectful, but be firm....know the law and don't take no for an answer if you believe it is what your child needs and deserves.....
