I noticed my son started gasping yesterday like he is not breathing right at certain times. I was wondering if anybody else was going through this too. Sometimes he also has times at night where he wakes up and is scared like he had a nightmare. I don't know if this is related or anything but I was wondering what everybody else thought
He may be having nightmares or night terrors. Kids with Autism can be prone to thiese. When he awakes is he aware of his surroundings - does he respond to you? If yes - probably nightmares. If no - probably night terrors. As for the gasping, I would check in with his doc. Could indicate a number of things - or could be something he has discovered and thinks is cool. Better to be sure though.Good luck - Deb
As a parent with a child with asthma, that is the first thing that crossed my mind. I think I would take him to an allergist who can do a breathing test to see if his lungs are fully functioning. Not being able to catch your breath is a scary and dangerous thing....It also might have something to do with tonsils or adnoids obstructing his airways...Your regular pediatrician should be able to take a look and see about that, although an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist would be a better fit. Please keep us posted.
I thought of asthma, too. My youngest has that. Does he make a rasping noise when he inhales? Does the skin above his collar bone pull in when he inhales? These two symptoms are the most easily recognisable symptoms of asthma. Basically, check for energy being expended on the inhale. In any case, if he looks like he's having a lot of trouble breathing, see his doctor. Of course, he may also really like the feeling and sound of gasping...
Have you had his evaluated for asthma or allergies?I know with a lot of kids, it goes hand in hand. We live in the North East, where its been very wet. Thus brings on mold allergy induced gasping. Just like you describe. Hope this helps!
