Any members live in Florida?

Any members with children on any level of the autism spectrum who would like to discuss the education system in Florida in regards to ESE kids, and lack of resources here in Florida, especially central Florida would like to discuss your experiences and share mine.

Re: Any members live in Florida?

What part of TN are you in? I am in Lake county FL, between Ocala and Orlando. We have no services for our son here. And we are looking into moving to TN, Sevierville area this summer. Was wondering what all was available there.

Re: Any members live in Florida?

Hi, Suzi, I'm in Central Florida, Ocala to be specific, and the school ESE services are so bad that I'm homeschooling my grandchild. In fact his IEP offered him language therapy but it turned out to be language instruction and because he has problems with handwriting, it just didn't work to have him dealing with three deficit areas at once: language, handwriting and social (this was in a group).  I feel he is better at home where he can relax a little and during his K year here, he learned to read at a 3rd grade level, using Headsprout.com. I don't even think he is SAFE in school, let alone that there is any possibility of their actually helping him learn, and he is an eager, ambitious student.

Re: Any members live in Florida?

We just moved to South Central Florida (Ft. Lauderdale/Coral Springs area) a few months ago.  Have a 3 1/2 year old girl who was just diagnosed on the spectrum.  Her main problem to our eyes is speech delay, very little stims, some tantrums (but what 3.5 year old doesn't??) most related to her lack of communication.  We have her in one preschool that we are really not happy with, but are staying with til end of year (a few weeks) and are going to likely do the Nova program in the fall.  Does anyone have ideas for inexpensive (or free) summer programs - what she really needs is social interaction.  Our goal is integration by kindergarden, so the more she is interacting with children, the better, and the more she will communicate.  Any help or info would be much appreciated!

Re: Any members live in Florida?

Live in North Florida (Orange Park) and I have had to fight for my son in the school system here.  He has been mainstreamed in regular 3rd grade VE inclusion class and will be relocating to his sisters school in the fall.  All I know is you have to fight and tell them EXACTLY what you expect and want to get any where.

Re: Any members live in Florida?

hi, i moved to palm beach county from massachusets almost 2 years ago. if i had the means to go back up north i would. i found out really quick that everthing down here for autism stinks! i had a very hard time finding a neurologist who would treat a child with autism. i had my 6 year old in the public school systyem for a month and pulled him out. he is in a great charter school for kids with autism. finding therapies for my 2 year old was almost impossible. i also could not find a pedi gastroenterologist here, i had to go to broward county( 50 miles away)

Re: Any members live in Florida?

We lived in SW FL (Sarasota area) up until November of 2007.. Surprisingly, my son was in a pre-K class at a public elementary school and it was phenomenal. It was called "communication class" and taught by the most gifted woman (Daniela Melton). Charlotte county schools has better than average classes for Autistic kids. Now here in NC- HA. It's sickening.
