Five year old DAUGHTER

i AM A PARENT WITH A FIVE year old daughter on the spectrum.  She has PDD and apraxia.  I find her to be more difficult than my son who has autism.  Is there anyone else with a daughter at this age or has gone through this stage of life?

Re: Five year old DAUGHTER

Sorry. My daughter is younger. My son is older and is by far the difficult one with apraxia issues. Let me know how it goes, she will be there sooner than later.

Re: Five year old DAUGHTER

I teach preschool children with moderate to severe disabilities. I have several girls on the spectrum in my class varying in age from 3-5. Some have been nonverbal, others have had emerging verbal skills. Each one is different, but that goes for my boys as well. I used to have mostly boys, but I have been receiving an increasing amount of girls. I enjoy all of them.

Re: Five year old DAUGHTER

Hi Jo anne,
I don't have a daughter on the spectrum, but I work with kids with moderate/severe autism and our class was "lucky" enough to have a lot of girls. I say "lucky" only in the sense that most of the classes were full of boys and we had "our princesses."  I have worked with girls grades 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th who are on the spectrum. Although I have a different perspective, from the classroom, I'd be happy to converse on the subject if my perspective can be of any help.

I grew so fondly of "my girls" that I made the character in my first book a girl. I was always waiting for my publisher to change her name from Chelsea to "John" but the publisher also thought it was important to have a girl "speak" about autism. I don't know if her character would help out in any autism awareness issues you come across, so I thought I'd introduce you to her site on YouTube.

You can "check her out" at

Keep in touch,
Joanna smile

Re: Five year old DAUGHTER

My daughter will be 5 next month.  She is dx'd as being on the spectrum (with no particular label of being high functioning or PDD or PDD NOS or Asperger's) The Team who assessed our daughter said "she is on the spectrum", and that it was too early to say exactly where.  She has a few quirks or "behaviours".  She smells EVERYTHING, is fascinated by TOILETS.  (She draws them, talks about them, has toys toilets she pretends are people, she has a collection of toilet cards from her IBI/ABA therapy that she carries around, although she is starting to lose interest in them and take a liking to fire hydrants and fire extinguishers!!!!)   She has a remarkable memory, when she was 18 months old we were looking through a family album.  She got off my lap and began collecting the items she saw in the pictures and bringing to me.  Academically she is above her peers, socially she is lagging, however she is quite sociable with adults and seems to enjoy their company.  We are working on her PEER PLAY with Programs in ABA Therapy, she is doing well with this.  She started daycare recently, just part time.  She loves it- (she has learned some new behaviours there!!!) LOL.. slapping, spitting her water, kicking her shoes off across the room...the list goes on!!! I look forward to chatting with other parents with girls (and boys on the spectrum as well as adults who have autism) smile Thnx for listening- have a super Sunday!!! smile Heidi

Re: Five year old DAUGHTER

My 6-year old granddaughter has a diagnosis of Autism/PPD-NOS because the therapist had to come up with a label in order to continue to bill the state for her treatment. She definately has some issues though. She babbled until she was 4 and then suddenly began speaking, but she doesn't express herself very well especially when it comes to expressing emotions or telling us if something hurts. But that is improving as well.

Like the previous poster's child, she is also doing well academically but not doing so well with peer play, espcially when it comes to playing with her older sister (who has ADHD and can be very impulsive). She gets very frustratede and hits her big sister who doesn't want to hit back. But her mommy can't deal with the wailing and meltdowns when I try to place her in her Naughty Spot - but we're working on dealing with it, and since trying to do it again the last couple of weeks she has been able to come out of her Time Out without continuing to have a meltdown for the next hour or more. Ah, progress. **smile**

Re: Five year old DAUGHTER

Hello
My daughter just turned 5 on Sunday the 13th ( Happy Birthday Emily) and she has speech apraxia. She is  going to Summer School for a few weeks and is working with her regular teacher on social skills as well as speech. She will not be in a regular Kindergarten class in the Fall, but that was no surprise to us. She has just started with verbal communication and is doing well, but is still at ( im guessing here ) around 24 months with her speech. Let me know if I can do anything to help.

hugs to all
