Florida Teacher

Just wondering if you all saw the story in the news about the FL teacher who humiliated her kindergarten student that has autism. It saddens me to think a teacher could be so cold. This poor little boy is devastated and emotionally scarred.

Re: Florida Teacher

I did see that....I didn't know he had Autism though. Regardless, you're just 5 years old in Kindergarten...I mean, come on! Someone who treats a child like that and defeats them so early in life shouldn't be working with kids at all.

Re: Florida Teacher

It is sickening to think someone would do that to Any child let alone a child with special needs.

Re: Florida Teacher

Personally, if that had been MY child she had done that to, I would have strangled her!  What an idiot!!!  I hope the family of this boy do NOT let this drop!

You can send a card to Alex to let him know he is special. He has really been hurt by this emotionally. When his mom drives his older sister to school, Alex screams that he can't go into the school. This story just makes me sick.

Re: Florida Teacher

I imagine the kids are wondering when it will happen to them.  I would be just as upset if
I were the parent of one of the other children in that classroom (even that school).

Re: Florida Teacher

I got an e-mail about it from the GEAR parent network with all the e-mail addresses from the school system and I sent them all a message stating exactly how wrong that whole incident was. It really got to me and I can't imagine the hurt and permanent damage to Alex. He will probably never want to set foot in a school again!!!

Re: Florida Teacher

yeah I heard about that and I could not believe that something like that would actually be going on!!  I just think about my own son and if that would happen to him, what it would do to him.  It is just horrible!!!

Re: Florida Teacher

Frankly, I'm not surprised it happened in FL.  We are in FL and my son was consistently "punished" for his autism in his old school.  He has terrible auditory processing -- the teacher let him go outside all day for a field day without water or sunscreen or a hat ( which were in his backpack) because he "didn't listen" when she told all the kids to get their stuff out of their backpacks.  She said his sunburn and dehydration was his consequence for not paying attention.

I almost sued someone.  We left the school instead.

Re: Florida Teacher

Hi I not only heard about this but it infuriated me. I emailed the school principal and the school board members. Of course I had no replies they have no problem humiliating him but can't respond to an adult. I think that whole school board needs to be fired. They need people in there that care about their children. I can tell you one thing if that ever happened to my son I would be their worst nightmare! What was even worse their reply to the media is that the teacher had done nothing wrong she stayed within the guidelines for dicipline in the school district????! WHAT then their rules need to be rewritten to please the parents of these kids.

Re: Florida Teacher

When I heard about this I was so ticked off, I had to go for a long walk and calm down before I talked to anyone about it.  If this happened to my child I would start a vote process of the children and parents of that school to give detention to every one of those students for the next year and a vote to remove that teacher from the school system.  Not a transfer to an admin desk, but termination from employment.  I would argue that if her vote process was upheld, mine should be too.  Then the legal suit against that teacher would be started.  Let's just say I do not feel anything could be done until my son saw and felt  a sense of justice over the matter.  I'll admit right now, the level of justice I would want could probably be equated to revenge.  For that teacher to just be unemployable in any school system and each of the administrators who supported her by allowing her to transfer would have to use their salaries to pay for my son's private schooling and therapy.  I know unrealistic and would probably never get it, but that is the level of my anger over this situation, I better quit typing until my blood ceases boiling over this incident.

Re: Florida Teacher

While looking at school systems we were told a long time ago that Florida had one of the worst records....not surprised by the fallout here, but then again I know a lot of teachers everywhere who could use a little re-education when handling any child with a disability.
