Loose tooth denial

My Jake has a very loose tooth, and he is not okay with it.  Does anyone have a social story  or anything that may help him cope with loosing it.  When grandma took out her teeth he wouldn't talk to her for days!!!

Re: Loose tooth denial

I wish I could offer some advice.  My son had the opposite problem:  He tried to pull his teeth out in hopes that he would get a glance at the tooth fairy--who he had a major crush on after seeing her in a picture book!  I would catch him in the mirror yanking on permanent teeth!

Re: Loose tooth denial

If the tooth is very loose and does not come out by itself, please don't wait too long to check with the dentist. My autistic 6 year old granddaughter had a new tooth growing in behind her baby tooth. We kept waiting for the new tooth to knock the baby tooth out of the way, but it kept hanging in there. After about two weeks we took her to the dentist and the baby tooth was impacted and infected.

They had to pull the tooth and scrape the root out by hand. YIKES! She already has some phobia about going to the dentist, this didn't help. Trouble is, she isn't really able to express when something like this is bothering her, all we knew was that she was more cranky than usual.

Re: Loose tooth denial

My son did this with all of his baby teeth!  We had to tell him to wiggle them all.  Took him to dentists, and all that -- they said to just tell him to wiggle.

My husband finally ended up pulling several of them for him ( only when they were REALLY loose).  He had a lot of fear.
Staying matter-of-fact about it helped my son not worry about it.

Re: Loose tooth denial

Stephan either ate his teeth or threw them across the room....by the time we had the PECS and convinced him to keep the tooth for the tooth fairy he was almost done... which was a cheap way of getting out of it! Glad the link helped, I'm sure there will be more and you'll have to use it!

Re: Loose tooth denial

Autism Mom, ROFL. Kids are sooo funny. My oldest was the same way he would try to pull teeth that were not ready just to get the money, lol. My Mom always puts a dollar for each year of his age for his birthday and one year he said "I can't wait until I am fifty" lol. I doubt my Mom will be around then so I will have to make a point to send him fifty dollars when he turns fifty even though he probably won't remember it.

Re: Loose tooth denial

My son was so excited to have a loose tooth and the $$ that came from it from the tooth fairy. But, he was extremely scared to lose it. He kept worrying, thinking it will hurt, thinking he will swallow it, thinking about the blood from it (he doesn't like to see blood too much). He has gotten a whole lot better though. Well, molars are loose now! New territory there. I hope he is ok with it.
