My #1 child's story of recovery

I have a much more detailed version written up but just wanted to write the basics here. My son is a miracle in every way but also carries the proud title of "recovered". He likes to tell people he's recovered and wants to help others understand that autism IS treatable. I know many of us on here know that, but we are surrounded by people every day who don't think it's possible. Our own pediatrician thinks I'm nutso (well I should say our previous ped lol). I share my son's story in the hopes that it will help others and encourage those already in the trenches!

He started out a BIG healthy baby at 9# 6oz. Whew! We both had a fever during labor so we both received antibiotics. Yipee. sad He couldn't shake his fever so he had IV antibiotics for 3 days. He left the hospital constipated and covered in eczema. He refused to breastfeed so I pumped and syringe fed him. For the next year of his life we were in the docs office bi-monthly for antibiotics for his chronic ear infections. We were also in the ER alot b/c of severe food allergies. At one year old, we saw an allergies who determined he was allergic to dairy, eggs and soy. We pulled these things from his (and my) diet and he never had another ear infection. Yay for small victories!! But he continued to have anaphylactic allergies so we pulled him from daycare and I became a SAHM. Shortly after that, I gave birth to his sister, who has her own story. smile We noticed my son was obsessed (and those of you who have OCD children know what I mean by that) with all things Blues Clues. But oddly enough, he started having nightmares about Blues Clues and we had to remove all BC stuff from his room or he couldn't sleep. Not too long after that, he started refusing all foods except for chicken fingers and oreos. He would bounce off furniture and obsess about stuff to the point of making us nutso. He was also so terrified of everything that he would not speak to anyone outside of the house. We thought it was just oddities b/c he was the most verbal critter around the house. He'd talk your ear off for hours on end about whatever his current obsession was (dinosaurs, rescue heroes, etc) so autism never crossed our mind. He would disappear into his own world and we could not get him out, but again, we just thought he had some personality quirks.

Then when he was 5 and his other sister had just been born, I was trying to talk to him and he was sitting on the bed, rocking back and forth, screaming 1,2,3,4,5, etc in a high pitched voice with a crazy look in his eyes; looking right thru me. That day, autism occured to me.

I took him to the ped who dismissed my concerns. I had just had another baby who had many, many severe food allergies as well, a friend kindly told me that she suspected my kids had candida. I thought, whatever... but I couldn't get rid of the thought; so I made an appt with the alternative doc she recommended. Boy what a day that was! Just a few minutes with them and it was clear I was the carrier and my kids were just magnified/more immune compromised versions of me!! As I researched and read, my mind nearly exploded with the information out there on WHY he was so different. Hearing the word autism was devastating, but in a way it was a relief b/c finally, I knew there was something I could fix!! Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine autism was just a medical condition caused by a number of things, but resulting in children so toxic they couldn't function. My wonderful husband & I determined right then and there that we would indeed recover our babies.

I have outlined in bullet fashion the improvements I saw with each intervention.

This are the major problems he had before intervention.:
Extreme constipation w/ mucous and blood in stool
Extreme food allergies
Screamed and screeched
Wild look in his eyes
Extreme shyness
Didn’t interact well with any child other than his sisters
Extreme OCD
Verbal stimming (counting 1-10 endlessly)
Inappropriate, hysterical giggling
Very sensory sensitive, hated certain textures in food and clothing
Hated his tags on clothes
Would only wear long sleeves and pants; preferring to keep all body parts covered with heavy fabric
Bounced off furniture
Needed to be “squished” to feel secure; preferred tight dark spots
Could not focus
Would spin for hours a day
Asthma so bad he couldn’t exert himself without being on 5 different medications
VERY literal; could not understand euphemisms or jokes.
Loud noises would send him cowering to a corner with his hands over his ears
In spite of food allergies, he was a picky eater; focusing on gluten products quite heavily to the exclusion of anything else.

*****Began intervention in 2005 when he was 6 years old.

After candida treatment (except for gluten removal), he was able to focus much more and stand still for periods of time; the wildness was gone from his eyes. He started having regular bowel movements every other day – although he still had diarrhea and constipation on occasion.

After gluten removal, he quit the inappropriate giggling, the stimming, and bouncing off furniture, quit wetting the bed and calmed down considerably. He has not had an asthma attack since removal of gluten.

The first few rounds of chelation, he started having regular formed bowel movements almost every day. He even said he felt better b/c he was going every day and was glad it didn’t hurt. He also lost some of his OCD tendencies. He no longer spins unless it’s part of a game someone is playing and does not do it for extended periods of time as it now makes him dizzy.

Since starting OT and Neurofeedback, he has completely lost his anxiety of everyday things, most of his OCD is gone, he can interact with ease with other children, he is learning to use his body at age appropriate levels (as in trunk rotation, balancing, etc), he is no longer sensory seeking and is happy in short sleeve shirts and short. Loud noises do not bother him anymore.

We are still chelating on the Cutler protocol but he is the most normal kid I know!! He can go up to a crowd of kids he's never met and blend right in. Not too long ago, he was playing football with kids his age!!! That, is a miracle. Before intervention he would not have only NOT gone out there with strangers to play, he would have collapsed in a hysterical heap when he got tackled (or touched for that matter) or didn't win. No one on that field knew he used to be autistic. He jokes with kids and gets their jokes. He is a delight and joy and I am so glad we discovered that autism is not permanent!!

I would never have chosen this path - having children with autism. But I have learned so much and met the most wonderful people on this journey. Autism is not easy but I am so glad it's reversible. To God be the glory!!

Re: My #1 child's story of recovery

Hi,  I would like to know more about the Cutler protocol.  We've been doing a very slow homeopathic type of chelation and I'm not sure it's really working.  Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Re: My #1 child's story of recovery

Mick, you can read about the Cutler protocol at www.noamalgam.com  Andy's books are on that site.  There is also a yahoo group called autism-mercury where his protocol is discussed at length.

Basically it's a chelation method using DMSA/ALA or DMPS.  Unlike regular DAN methods though it'sa very LOW dose administered every 3 or 4 hours round the clock for 72 hours.  This uses the half-life of the medicines to keep the metals moving so there is constant pulling for 3 days and very little redistribution.  Although it's also a slow method, it's using traditional sulfur metal pullers and is very powerful if taken correctly.

Let me know if I can help you further.

I'd like to know more about the candida and what was done to treat it.  What kind of holistic practitioner did you see?   An ND or someone else?  Are you working with a DAN doctor on the chelation or a regular ped?  Thanks in advance.  Laura

Re: My #1 child's story of recovery

I am so happy for you and your family. It is wonderful to get recovery, I hope we can all get there someday. I have researched Andy's protocol and find it very difficult to follow. I also don't understand why you have to give the ALA so frequently. I am having great success with Natural Cellular Defense (zeolites) but have heard from others that the ALA works great in conjunction with NCD. I just can't follow such a strict protocol. I would probably try it if my son was more severe as I have heard woderful things about it.
