We've been here for about 6 months, but we have no friends, and the few we did have were chased away by my son's behavior... No one understood that it wasn't his fault... I'd love to meet some parents who get it.

Hi-
Just saw this article on NC event:
Autism Summer Insitute is Aug. 11-14 at UNH
Article Date: Sunday, July 6, 2008
DURHAM — The UNH Institute on Disability is welcoming CarolAnn Edscorn as a returning keynote presenter for this year's Autism Summer Institute.
She will offer her keynote presentation on Tuesday, Aug. 12, from 9:15-10:30 a.m.
Reflecting on her experience last year, Edscorn was most impressed with how Institute participants wanted to affect change for their family members, friends and students who experience ASD.
"I was in awe of the commitment and compassion of so many people," she said. "Educators and parents and other helping professionals that are dedicated to understanding and then taking action are what we need."
Her main goal for speaking this year is to allow participants to experience real hope for seeing change through to fruition.
"I don't want to give people a sense of hope," said Edscorn. "I want them to actually experience hope."

I live in VA near the border of NC. Carroll county. I must admit that there are some nice things about the "smallness" of the area when it comes to the attention my children receive from the public school they attend. I'm also fortunate to have wonderful case manager's who help me find resources for my children. I feel like I actually live in Mayberry at times but I can say the people that work with my children are in for the right reasons and it's not just a job.....

WOW JaredBella.....I feel the same way! We live near the VA border as well...in Franklin County....about an hour or so North of Raleigh. We picked a po dunk town but they welcomed us with open arms, told us they could accomodate our children and it really felt wonderful. They've been very supportive as we have run into a few issues with our youngest Stephan developing seizures once we moved here and such.
They have had faith in our kids, have let them reach what ever goals they wish and they really have blossomed here. I always was in the mind set in New York (where we were originally from) that the smaller the district the less things you get...it was all about the money....but here it's about as small as you get and yet they get everything they need....who knew!!!!

I lived in Franklin, VA in 1991. I loved it there. I miss the fireflies and the lightning storms. I hope you find some friends. Thanks for stirring up memories for me.
