We have a service dog. We have had him for 3.5 years. He finished his training about 2
years ago. He is "owner trained" through a local program. He has made a big difference in our lives. My son's primary issue when we got Zeus was impulsive running. It isn't an issue anymore. He has also helped Michael to have the responsibility to care for Zeus.
He helps with the walking and feeding,etc. The plus of having a service dog is that they can go anywhere with you. Zeus has flown with us (at our feet) to New York and to Austin.

We are just in the process of a service dog . We received tha application few days ago filling it out asap. Keep my fingers crossed. Our son is a heart attack waiting to happen. With no sense of danger or any fear especailly water, i sure hope things work out..

My friend has a dog from paws4ability. Her son loves it and it has made a big difference in his life. I think her son is 10 now.

A therapy dog is different than a service dog. A service dog has access rights and performs at least one service for a disabled individual. A therapy dog does not have the same access rights (ie go in a restaurant, grocery store etc). A therapy dog doesn't perform a specific service for an individual.

I've heard of these! I would love to have one for our youngest, but my husband doesn't want any animals. We had a cat once and found out that we are not great pet owners. I think my son would benefit from it, but I'm not sure we could keep up with the care of both of our boys' special needs and a dog's, too. It still floats around in the back of my mind as a possibility, though.

I'd love to have one for Kai, but unfortunately as far as I'm aware it's relatively new to the UK and they won't consider us for the one pilot scheme we have found because I have two children on the spectrum. Apparently I don't fit the criteria because I have two even though I know it would help us as a family and each child would have there own special time with the dog. I'm gutted and angry, again I wish I lived in the US sometimes!

I dont have a service dog persay......but I have a black lab/border collie mix...and he has just been absolutely wonderful with my son. They have a special bond...and some how the dog knows that richie is special....so he watches him like a momma bear. Richie also has seizures and there have been times in the middle of the night that he would wake us up and not leave us alone until we checked on Him. Or if he has gone outside without me knowing it...he will come and get me. I truely wish he was trained...but for not being trained...He is truly irreplaceable.
