Big believer in early intervention!

My son got in early intervention when we lived in Missouri when he was 32 months old. By then he barely talked, screamed and threw fits. He is doing a lot better now. He will enter kindergarten next year, This past year, we moved to Indiana and my baby got in early intervention here. She was diagnosed PDD last month and asperger's by the doc this month. She has made huge strides since entering early intervention (called First Steps here). I am just so proud of them. Their therspists have played a key role in their development. I hope everyone gets all they can out of it and has a good community to support them. Too bad we have waitlits here in Indiana for medicaid waivers. May everyone have good transitions to pre-school. That was tough. I was so used to them getting one on one attention and more time. But my son is still making good progress. It was just hard at first.

Re: Big believer in early intervention!

You are so lucky as you may have seen by my user name we live in Ky and my child's first pediatrician kept telling me that I was a paranoid parent. I kept reassuring him that something wasn't right. I tried to get him in to united way Easter seals and everything that I thought of but had no idea where to go. They told me that they would have to put him on a waiting list and by the time his name came up it would be to late for him to get early intervention because there were so many children in our area who needed help. So needless to say I had him put on the list  anyway and he was 5 before we got any diagnosis which of course ended up being autism. I was so angry that we missed out on so much help because I started calling places at the age of 24 months he had been speaking up until 15-18 months. Then after having 2 mmr shots by the health departments mistake because they said they left the serum out he became completely non-verbal. These babies need help as early as possible. Garrett is just now starting to say a few 2 word phrases and trying to hold a conversation by starting it and you answer him he answers you back once or twice but that is a blessing for us he is 7 now and he has come such a long way! I am so proud of him!

Re: Big believer in early intervention!

I also believe in early intervention.  We weren't in any program.  We didn't wait for an official diagnosis.  We sought out OT and speech indivdually and were lucky enough to get excellent therapists.  We dropped ABA (made him regress) and preschool.  We just focused on private speech and OT.  It worked for my son.  We have always been lucky enough to have decent insurance.
