Tomorrow, I'll attend yet another IEP meeting for my son....He is 13, and these meetings are no longer new and don't require nearly the preparation that they did for me in the early years--thankfully. But they still can be daunting and take a lot of energy to do well...What advice do you have for preparing properly for an IEP meeting? Advice about what to bring/who to bring? How to be heard and respected? What to expect? Etc... Would love to hear your thoughts....

I just attended a presentation by a special ed attorney....record your IEP's (with proper notice), make sure the end document is specific, don't let team members leave the meeting, and don't sign anything you are not happy with. One example given is the IEP needs to specify who is going to provide what service...speech with be provided by a licensed SLP 30 min twice a week in a 1:1 setting. If the IEP doesn't say it; they don't have to do it. Also the child IEP should be made from scratch; not from aa cookie cutting school district recipe.

I just attened a wrights conference. This was so helpful. I by no means feel like I could give advice my son is only 8. Be professional I tend to be buddy buddy and make friends with everyone. Well that can be used against us.If you have any evals done on your son get copies 10 days befor a metting so you can go over the reports befor hand.In Ca we have a Tri-annual and if your son has alot of services that can be alot of reports to see for the first time in a meeting. Also put everything in writing, if it's not in writing it's not worth the paper it's on. YES EVERYTHING. A phone call dosen't hold a lot of ground. Well I hope that helped it sure is helping me. I hope it goes well tommower for you. Blessing!!

IEP meeting aren't new to me either. Things with school have settled down quite a bit. I am happy with placement so that's not an issue - this used to be so huge for us. This year when he transitioned to high school I was able to select his teacher from three different types of classes. I think if school would just give us a choice and include us more there would be a lot less fighting and stress. Anyway since I was able to select his teacher I feel like she and I are on the same page as far as goals. I do respect her and value her but I feel I get the same in return. My only advice - take it for what it's worth.. not much...lol.. but go in without any surprises. My son is 16 now and I can't count the meetings I have had at school.. Now I enjoy them and look forward to hearing about what he is learning and how he is learning.. I think if it's the right place then the teacher will listen to you and respect you. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
