Is anyone else upset about the mandatory boosters being required at Maine's Universities since the recent mumps outbreak in Portland?
I am posting portions of an article stating that boosters are often "over-vaccination" and adults need to have their titers tested from immunity before receiving any booster.
Report: Vaccine booster shots may be unnecessary
http://www.newsday.com/news/health/ny-h … 5400.story
Scientists writing in the New England Journal of Medicine found that immunity lasts far longer than previously believed, suggesting that fewer booster shots may be warranted in adults. Still other doctors are wondering whether new vaccine approaches would better aid children.
Dr. Mark Slifka, an associate scientist with the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute in Oregon, wanted to know how long immunity lasts after vaccination or infection. He and his colleagues went into the study with a lot of strong hypotheses and "expected to see long-lived immunity following a viral infection and relatively short-lived immunity after vaccination." Those notions, Slifka and his team said, are the reasoning for booster shots.
To his surprise, the research revealed that the immunity the body marshals after vaccination with tetanus and diphtheria lasted far longer than scientists had once believed. Immunity that arose after certain viral infections, Slifka and collaborators discovered, were essentially maintained for life.
Although it is important for the country to abide by vaccination as a vital public health tool, Slifka reported in the journal, it also is important to understand that boosters are not always necessary.

Yes! When the story first aired and they mentioned some 200 students had already been vaccinated, I just cringed. I wonder if anyone will even put 2 and 2 together when those poor kids suddenly can't focus on their work.
Ugh!

I attended the university here in Maine and at age 20, was required to get a measles booster to attend. I sometimes wonder what that did to my immune system...

I think it is bunk. I have been vaccine free myself for over 20 years. I hope to stay that way. What is next you must have your tetnus before going to the Post Office, Hep A before using the bathroom in a county courthouse, MMR before you vote. I find it ironic that some of those that are infavor of mandatory vaccinations are against "socialized" medicine. - "Don't Tread On Me"

What got me upset was the article I read recently that said that parents may face jail time for not getting vaccinations in Maryland. I understand their safety precautions in keeping the spread of disease under control, but, well, I just don't know what to say. They're backing us into a corner. Vaccinate and risk a developmental disorder or go to jail?

I recently read that, regarding the Maryland issue, many of the children that were required to be re-vaccinated were already up-to-date, but the school had lost their records...If that is the case, we should be prepared for a rise in vaccine-related issues from those over-vaccinated kids....Sad.

25 cent worth. I am in the belief that the vaccinations and other factors are leading to long term effects on the adults that have received them and in the long (short in some cases) childern born to them. I got a tenus shot for school it required. And the doctor said you never had and named a much of shots I said no. My dad has never get a vaccine except the one they had to get in the service back in 79 and has not had any since and is one of the healthest people I know. My self I do not get sick that offten the same is true for my brother. My wifes side has alway get there shot and are sick twice as offten>(makes you wonder)
The Maryland case is ludicris I am a Criminal Justice Major and thing its unbelievable.

There is a very easy way for us to end the speculation on whether vaccinations are linked to autism. In my opinion, I believe there are a lot of factors at play - 1st I think there is a genetic pre-disposition, secondly, I think our kids have a compromised immune system (I know my son had chronic respiratory infections and was antibiotics for a year). So, when they get these vaccinations, particularly the MMR, it wreaks havoc with their already compromised immune system and pre-disposition for having autism. I asked my pediatrician if there was a reason for the immunization timeline they follow and was told no. I personally think it is because it is infinitely easier to give a shot to a 16 month old versus a 4 yeard old. Anyway, the easy fix is just to wait longer to give kids the MMR and the other vaccinations. I waited on my daughter until right before she went to school and thankfully she is fine. If doctors did this and autism continued to climb or even remain the same, they could have a valid argument that there is no link. BUT, if the number of cases of autism starts to decline then even they would have to admit there is a link. Just my 2 cents.

That is a bunch of ____!I had my last MMR in 1990. In 2002 and 2005, my titers were checked and they were still fine. They test when you get preggers when all the blood tests are done. So 12 and 15 years later I was still fine. These people just need to stop where they are and evaluate all they do.
