Oh no, it's CRCT week! This is the week when Aaron pulls out his hair...literally! He's taking his medication and is given the test one-on-one so he can "talk out" the questions. They have even decided to let him write on the testing booklet so he doesn't have to count down the scantron sheet for each question. He's getting lots of sleep, a good breakfast and I'm sending an extra snack & a stress ball for him to hold, but this WILL be a week full of melt downs and stress. Any suggestions? We're in 3rd grade, so we have to do well this year!

As a teacher I really resent standardized testing. I feel it tests the wrong things, even in nt children. In grade 3 it tests stamina and reading skills not comprehension...if they can make it through those tests they are doing well to begin with...and then why do we need to compare children, what we are really trying to compare is teachers isnt it, and that isnt really fair. They say funding isnt based on these tests, but in some sneaky way it is..and they publish lists rating schools. I know they just want to make sure each child is getting the same curriculum...however, the way we teach now is very different from the way we test. I use methods of teaching that address the way all my students learn - some kids are hands on learners, some auditory, some need to write it down, etc...and then they all have t o do stupid written tests.....
i just feel for the kids

Just curious, why do you have to do well in 3rd grade? My son will test later this year but they are giving him a special ed version. I have never worried about standardized tests even with my NT children. I have always viewed them as more of a $$$ thing for the schools. My daughter is a college junior this year and no one ever looked at her test scores except for the SAT.

In 3rd and 5th grades students, at least in GA, must meet certain standards in order to pass! Aaron is very smart and his teachers & support staff know he CAN do well, but the stress of it all is a bit much. Last time he totally shut down and refused to take the test.

Okay this is just my opinion but that is just wrong that he would have to do well to pass. My sister ( who is now an M.D. ) did awful on testing and for all intents and purposes she is NT. Give him protein bars they will help boost him a little.

I agree it is wrong to pass or fail a child based on a standardized test. It should be based on the whole picture especially when there are learning issues involved. CA won't keep a child with an IEP back a grade. At least that is what they told me when my son was out of school for 8 months and they still wanted to promote him. I won that fight.

I have a very good relationship with the LEA who is doing Aaron's testing. I need to ask her if it is possible for him to pass if he does poorly on the test. I know we've done pretty well staying on task so far. The biggest problem arose when the reading portion was a recipe! He is very into recipe's right now and really obsessed about it for a while. It took her a while to explain to him to his satisfaction that they could not in ANY way copy the recipe from the testing materials.
Just one day into testing and he has not pulled any hair out! Yippee! I hope the next four days go as well.
