Early Interviention...acting "as if"...

Hi there,

I have a question and haven't been able to find a place to ask it.  I'm not sure that this is the right place (if not, I apologize in advance) but here goes...

My identical twin sister has a son on the spectrum.  My husband and I are going to start trying to get pregnant soon and I am looking at the situation as "high risk".  If you were in this situation, or if you had one child with Autism and were thinking about having another, what would you do/not do?

Thanks so much,

Deb

Hi Deb-
I remember reading the note from a recent DAN conference and one of the speakers focused on preparing for a healthy pregnancy.  There were recommendations for diet, supplements, products to avoid etc...I'll see if I can find the  source and get back to you.

Okay, found it.  Dr. Nancy O'Hara, MD spoke at the Oct. 2007 DAN Conference.

The title of her speech was Fostering a Healthy Environment for our Children
The address listed for her is:
150 Danbury Rd., Wilton CT

Maybe you can listen to a webcast on the DAN site......
I'll get back to you if I find more info

Found a link:
http://www.autism.com/danwebcast/2007anaheim.htm

Scroll down to find that webcast entitled:
Prevent Harm Now: How to Carry, Birth and Raise a Healthy Child in a Toxic World
Nancy O’Hara, MD (Anaheim 2007)

Maybe after you listen, you can come back and share the helpful tips that you learn.

Good luck!

Re: Early Interviention...acting "as if"...

Is there more incidences in your family? Diagnosed and undiagnosed as well. If so, you may be at a higher risk. Just be careful of what you eat, whether your yard and/or house is sprayed for insects, fertilizer, etc. Also I would definitely turn down the flu shot during pregnancy. I did not have any more because I had my minimum amount of kids (2 because I was an only) and they are enough work for me. Both of mine are on the spectrum. Its big in our famliy though it is not diagnosed. I figured we should not have any more biological children. Plus my two pregnancies were awful. I was not meant to carry kids just to teach them. We said that if our lives ever settle down we would adopt. I really do not think that will happen. Plus my two on the spectrum are expensive. I hope this helps. Send a message if you want.

Re: Early Interviention...acting "as if"...

Hi Deb - I am in So Cal and a new member too!

At 43 - we already had a 12 yr old son diagnosed with Aspergers Disorder - when we chose to try and have one more child.
We new that at our age, risks were involved AND that the risk of an ASD - being that we became aware of my husbands own issues with our sons dx - was high.
We also knew that we had managed to come this far and also knew how special our first son is - and were willing to give it a try.

I know that this is a very personal decision for you - but it helped me to think at the time, that I had one neuro typical daughter who was bright, gifted and was a social butterfly - and one Aspie son who was bright, struggled with communication and who wanted nothing more than friendships he was not able to form.
And I loved them both for their differences AND uniqueness.

Good luck with whatever you decide!
