Re: RDI

I have personally never tried it because we do ABA and DTT but I have herd from others it's very good as ABA can cause some kids to be "robot like" even though Anthony isn't in the least "robot like" his one therapist told me that you have to have floor time with ABA along with other therapies,

Re: RDI

ABA does not create robot like responses/characteristics. I should say that to this point ABA is the best researched and produces the best results. What might appear robot like is really the child trying very hard to put words together he might not typically say....first it's somewhat purposeful and deliberate, then becomes more second nature and natural. Many of these children won't expand conversation without this approach. Even RDI can get this response as our kids are learning something new.  I think a program with both is good. RDI doesn't have the research to support children overcoming their diagnosis critieria, but it is easy to do and everyone will agree that the more one to one experiences the better. I should also say that ABA has 5 components and they are all geared around the child and include play strategies, etc., so a therapist that suggests you have to use Floortime or other suggests they don't understand ABA.  Floortime is play with purpose and of course is a positive approach, but again, doesn't have the research supporting what progress is made, etc.

Still using the ABYLLS to make sure you don't miss any area of development would be helpful.

RDI is great because it involved the family very directly with the child, it increases relationships and bonding and helps families better understand the child. It's expensive to get going, but it's worth your money if you stay with the program. Get trained while your at it and help train other parents too.

Re: RDI

I have chosen to pursue an RDI certification because it seems to best fit my teaching style, and view on child development.  When I teach, I try to differentiate between (among?) the child him/herself - their unique personality, their developmental age, and the autism.  It seems that I was already "doing RDI" in my classroom, so that's where I'm headed.  I am also working on learning as much from Barry Prizant's SCERTS model, from whom Steve Gutstein has used research.  I have also been "doing SCERTS"-like protocols without knowing it, so...   I only know what I hear about all other models, and am trying to listen and learn as much as possible.
