ESY

Shouldn't  the ESY program include therapies? I thought the whole reason for extended school year was to prevent regression. Any input appreciated.

Thanks, Sonya

Re: ESY

I just had my one daughter's IEP.  She will be in the Summer program but they told me therapy is reduced during the Summer.  So she will be getting one day a week of speech and I believe the same for OT.  I was kind of surprised.  I actually think I am going to take her out of the Summer program and work with her myself.  We can get in OT at the beach and the park and Grandpas house.  She has come far the last few weeks and I think will do fine over the Summer.  My son however is in the full day Summer program.  It is just an hour shorter then the regular school year.  I have his meeting Friday and will be curious to see if his therapy schedule is changed as well.

Re: ESY

All of our therapies remain the same in ESY.

Re: ESY

We do not receive ESY services. They get two weeks of summer school and that is it. No therapies either. They do not get qualified unless they will lose their skills over the summer. It sucks.

Re: ESY

I had my sons IEP today and his therapy services are staying the same through the Summer.  My daughter is doing really well so that may be why they were reducing her therapy.  Just enough to keep on her so she does not regress--but they also do alot of therapy stuff with the class.

Re: ESY

My son will receive ESY through the summer, per his IEP.  He will be going from every day to every other day, but with slightly longer hours and OT/ST offered as usual.  Last year, I had to fight for any ESY (different state, different district), and I think they are looking at the regression he had when we moved and are concerned about maintaining his current rate of progress, so there was no problem getting services for him through the summer.  I was pleasantly shocked!

Re: ESY

Good Point! My son has attended an all year round school for the past 4 years...this will be his first year going to ESY....and like you....so far, I'm not impressed at all....and will probably be complaining about the same things you are! Lack of services!

Re: ESY

I will share this one tip that I picked up....a good time to ask for an evaluation on you child for ESY....is right before christmas break...tell them that you want you child evaluated for regression....and if it takes them at least three days to get back to where they were before the break...then they qualify for summer services! Well It takes most Kids that long...Hope it helps!
