IEP goals

Hi, today was the last day of school for my son. We got his progress report and he met very few of the IEP goals that where set at the beginning of the year. So I am assuming that next year they will be goals again but what if he still doesn't meet them? It is our first year so I am still learning. I just read the book Wrights Law from emotions to advocacy but I don't think I learned much besides learning to write letters and working with the school system using kindness instead of aggitation. Any input appreciated.

Thanks, Sonya

Re: IEP goals

If the goals aren't being met it might be time to re-evaluate placement.  I know several people whose children didn't meet their goals until the placement was changed.  Do you think the goals are appropriate?  School districts are notorious for setting goals too low.

Re: IEP goals

Either the goals are too out of reach and need to be simplified, or they are teaching the skill in a way that is not the style of the learner or as Jake9068 said to reevaluate placement. My son is not hitting any of his pt goals. It is very disappointing.

Re: IEP goals

From my experience, I would guess the goals are ok or even low and that something else is amiss.  For example, in my friend's childs case, the district set a goal of being able to sit on swing (3 - 4 yrs old) for 20 seconds.  She ended up going to due process and got private services.  He passed the district goal and and swing by himself with pumping.  He has started to read.  The district set low goals and weren't using appropriate methods to teach him.  It is so important to teach in a way the child learn.  My son has experienced that issue.  ABA din't work for him the teaching method made him go backwards.
