Inclusion/mainstreaming

I am pushing for partial inclusion in the preschool class for my son's second year in preschool. He is very deficient in social skills and I don't feel that he can learn speech or social skills from other children who have the same issues as him. I am just worried if I am making the right decision, what if he can't survive in a regular class, how do you get a aide? He can't feed himself with choking and needs to be supervised with most activities. I would really like for him to attend the neighborhood kindergarden which would mean he would have to be mainstreamed. I need some input as I am not sure what to do.

Thanks, Sonya

Re: Inclusion/mainstreaming

I am in the same position.  I have my sons IEP meeting Friday.  One thing I know his school does is take kids from the full day autistic class and they spend half a day in one of the other special ed preschool classes that are language based.  I have two daughters in two of those classes.  Honestly they are just like regular preschool classes except they have OT,PT and Speech therapists and aides assigned to each class.  The kids get group and/or individual therapy.  But it is regular preschool curriculum.  My son also needs help in the socialization skills.  He does much better at home because as you said the kids in his class have the same issues.  I am hoping they will agree to it.  Even a trial over the Summer would be great.  I would ask for a trial if they are hesitant.  You could always move him back to where he is now.  Let me know how you make out....when is your meeting?

Re: Inclusion/mainstreaming

Ours isn't due until August but I was afraid if I waited there would be no space available for him in the typical class. I talked to the director and she is saving him a space so that I don't have to rush and can discuss it with the IEP team in August. It is overwhelming.

Re: Inclusion/mainstreaming

I had my sons IEP meeting today.  They actually already had it in there to include him in the 1/2 day special ed preschool classroom and the typical preschool classroom for more interaction.  They will start with one day a week and build up as he does better.  This does get overwhelming!  It's hard because you are trying to look at not only what they need now but what they will need in a few months.  But remember the IEP's are working papers and can be changed at any time necessary if things change.  Good luck!
