Chiropractic manipulation

How many of you have used chiropractic care with you child?  What have you found it to be useful for?  Was it difficult to get your child used to the idea?

We have been using it for over a year.  We started it initially b/c I wanted the children's central nervous systems to be clear to detox while we were chelating.  We still do chelate and have chirpractic adjustments weekly for it; but I have found it useful in the area of allergies, bowel issues and many others.  My chiro is a wonderful guy and he worked very slowly with the kids, letting them warm up to him and only doing partial adjustments until they were comfortable with him.  My DAN! is also a chiropractor but my children are not comfortable with his adjustments so we see another doc for the adjustments...

What's your experience?

Re: Chiropractic manipulation

I love my chiropractor for my own issues of back pain and hip pain from running.....It is amazing how with a few adjustments, my pain is gone---when nothing else helped.  I would love to know more about it for use with children on the spectrum.

Re: Chiropractic manipulation

Hey Shannon. smile  My kids get manipulations once a week.  We started out at twice a week and worked our way down.  He mainly started working with them to keep their central nervous systems clear and open for detox while we chelate.   Their immune system has really had a boost from it as well though and they stayed healthy when my husband got the flu - just a miracle if you ask me!!  LOL

An article by Sala Horowitz, Ph.D. entitled "Evidence-Based Applications for Chiropractic."  In the subsection of the article titled "Indications Beyond Back Pain," she states, "In the case of autism, preliminary studies support the view that correcting abnormal movement of the first cervical vertebra can improve neurological function." This quote is supported by a research study performed by Jennings J, Barker M. Autism: A chiropractic perspective. Clin Chiropract 2006;9:6-10.

Re: Chiropractic manipulation

Sounds fascinating.  I really want to try it for Wynn as soon as he is in a mental place where he could handle someone touching him.  Right now, for some reason, he is very sensitive to touch--like it is painful....Good information for the future.  Thanks

Re: Chiropractic manipulation

Shannon, I can understand your hesitancy.  On the kids first visit the chiropractor didn't even touch them.  His wife works in the school system with autistic children so he is in-tuned to the needs that come with these kids.  He let them lay on the table (if they wanted) and used a handheld machine to roll up their backs (again, if they wanted).  He didn't force anything and didn't even adjust them the first visit.  He was very gentle and unhurried.  It took a while before they got to the full adjustments b/c he went so uber slow.

Once when visiting my folks in another state, we went to a chiro there and he was too brusk with the kids.  We never went back and it took my little one a few weeks to even trust our old chiro again b/c of it.  But now even my 2 year old climbs up on the table yelling "MY TURN!"  It definately wasn't that way in the beginning.

If you could find someone who is quiet mannered and understands the need to go slowly, it may be easier for him.  I understand the need to wait for his timing, but for later, it would be good to find someone who isn't "all business" and understands the need for delicacy.

Re: Chiropractic manipulation

We see a chiro too.  He was able to help Casper with his jaw being out of place.  No one know what was casuing the agiations.  Our chiro is also a natural/holistic Dr.  and he knows I will not give Casper or the boys any Rx drugs.   We also see an OT trained in Cranial Sacrial Therapy, this is great.  I went to a training through The Upledger Institute, it is very interesting and useful.

Re: Chiropractic manipulation

Isn't it interesting the different parts of the body that can be helped with chirpractic care?

Re: Chiropractic manipulation

Garrett has been going to the chiropractor for 15 months now and I was so suprised at the improvements that he has had! I would tell anyone with an autistic child for sure take them right away don't wait. I wish I had taken Garrett years ago I could have made such a  difference in his learning and everything for him. It has helped ao many aspects of his life. Let me first say Garrett started going for 3 times a week for one year and we only missed 2 or 3 visits. Then at the one year mark the chiropractor dropped it to 1 time every other week. Garrett is much calmer, is able to focus to learn we noticed that with in the first month. His health has improved dramatically. Allergies are doing so much better. I was afraid that Garrett wouldn't hold still for them to work on him but that wasn't a issue after the first or second time. Garrett loves going he hold really still for him and trusts him completely. So the improvements that we have seen
Calmer, Focusing,Allergies, Health, Speech, LEARNING, there have been many improvments I would tell everyone take them you will be surprised at the outcome!

Re: Chiropractic manipulation

My son also loves to go. I take him once a month. Since we started it around the same time we started the biomed so it is hard to say what is helping most. I also use chiropractic and swear by it.

Re: Chiropractic manipulation

My husband is a chiropractor and acupuncturist.  My 9 year old son, who has autism and also suffers from epilepsy has been receiving adjustments since 2 days after he was born.  He loves them.  He asks for an adjustment everyday and we have to tell him no.  He has also now been receiving acupuncture for almost 2 years.  Since he has been doing the acupuncture, I do notice that he is calmer and more alert for a day or so after his treatment.  It is hard for us to really tell what the chiro adjustments do for him since he has been getting them for so long.  I think it is great that these kids are being exposed to the alternative methods of dealing with some of their more troublesome symptoms and I really tip my hat to the parents that stick with it.

Good luck!

Re: Chiropractic manipulation

Seriously, I adjust my kids myself when I get the chance or remember to.  If you have been to the chiro enough, you learn what to do.  I even adjust my wife now and then, more now instead of then!  When I adjust my son that is severe, he loves it!
