Drowning Incident in the Communiy: A Reminder to Teach Kids to Swim

Sadly and tragically, little 6 year old Ashley Brock drowned last week in a neighbors pool.
She had autism and her parents constantly worried about such an event--as we all do.
Her parents are encouraging everyone to make sure that their children learn to swim to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future...

Here is a link to a website that shares information about a technique that teaches babies and young children to flip over and float on their backs if they ever fall into a pool.

It does seem that our children have a fascination with water and it's very important that all parents teach their children to swim or have swimming lessons.  Also if you have a pool, I would suggest an alarm system for your doors because it's so easy for children to sneak out unnoticed.

Re: Drowning Incident in the Communiy: A Reminder to Teach Kids to Swim

Are there programs that specialize in teaching special needs kids to swim?  If there are, how do I find one?  My son is so attracted to water.  it really scares me.  He would be in a pool in a second.  This has been one of my biggest fears for him.  It breaks my heart that this family is dealing with this now.  How sad when they were trying so hard to protect her.

Re: Drowning Incident in the Communiy: A Reminder to Teach Kids to Swim

Water has always been a magnet for my son. When we were living in Japan, I signed him up for one of those infant classes...and we did try to teach him to swim that way...but it just didnt click with him. However, he did learn at that particular pool where the water was that he couldnt touch the bottom on..but that didnt work, when we went to other places. So When we PCS'd back to the states...we were living in a Holliday Inn for 30 days. And He wanted to go swimming every night...which also helped him relax and go to sleep. So what I would do with him, I would take him to the edge...just where he couldnt touch the ground and take him out about a foot from the side and put him on his tummy and tell him to swim to the side...to kick etc....and it took some time but he finally got it. He also learned how to touch the bottom of the pool and jump to the top and keep jumping till he could touch. Now my son is a fish....and I need an indoor swimming pool.
But I definately understand this fear...it was and in someways still is a big fear of mine. Cause he can swim...but I still dont know if he would swim or panic if he got in the really deep end.
My heart goes out to this family and their loss.

My kids love the water...I'm going to put them in swimming lessons hopefully this summer. I'll keep the girl's family in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks for the link.
