My son has always engaged in compulsive behaviors but recently they have seemed to dominate his life. He is time obsessive, can not tolerate loosing at anything, extremely competative with other children. He gets very aggresive when something doesn't go the way he expects it too. My school district has suggested that I speak to the doctor about OCD, has anyone else had experiance dealing with this?

We have compulsive behaviors but so far they aren't to much of a problem. Good luck, wish I had some info to help.

My son is very compulsive! He HATES to lose at anything, either. We simply try to talk to him about it and the school is also working with him on being a "good loser" instead of an "angry loser". We tell him that you can't win at everything all the time!

OCD is the king of our house! Wynn has had it severely for probably 5 years. Sometimes it is worse than others. I would, if possible, stay away from medications as the side effects are worse than the benefit. Here are some natural ideas for calming the anxiety that leads to OCD:
-Inositol
-GABA
-Magnesium/Calcium
-L-theanine
-Chromium
-Vitamin C
-B-Complex (B vitamins are depleted during times of stress/anxiety)
-Melatonin/Valerian for sleep
Talk to a good DAN doctor because many times, the best dosage might be much higher than the recommended daily allowance and you will need some professional supervision.
Also, anxiety/OCD can be pain/inflammation related, so consider treating with motrin to see if he responds to an anti-inflammatory/pain reliever. If so, pain and inflammation may be the problem.

Thank you so much for your very valuable information. I will definately research it further and discuss it all with my doctor.
Actually we did try med's risperdal, and it made him completely worse and now that we have stopped it, he seems to be having withdrawl.

Risperdal is a heavy duty drug with a lot of possible side effects. It definitely does not help everyone. I know of more than one child that has been hospitalized due to the effects of Risperdal.

Monkey's psychiatrist has talked about putting him on Risperdal eventually. Right now he is too young, so they have him on Clonidine. He's been aggressive also, but the meds seem to help.
I have OCD myself. Medication is extremely helpful for me! However, I don't have an ASD, and I didn't start the medication until college age. It is something worth looking into, though, if OCD is an issue.

Hi...as was posted earlier...our house is also ruled by OCD. My son has many compulsions and obsessions which run his life (and ours). His psychiatrist has him on Prozac and we have definitely seen it as helpful (we put off medication for years despite the advice of doctors and tried many other interventions). The behaviors still exist but they have been "dulled" (many of them are not as intense and are not as regularly occurring as they were). Watching him become more and more trapped and frustrated by his rigid needs was very frightening and we knew that we needed to at least try meds. if it could bring him some peace. Good luck to you...lisadianne2

My son is on meds for his anxiety and OCD too....and it takes things down a notch, but we have never seen meds resolve the issue. The difficult part of dealing with meds is that it interferes with finding the real cause of the anxiety/OCD because of the side effects, of the need to constantly tweak it, and because it often quits working altogether and has to be switched--which can take months to wean off one and on to another...And in the meantime, we have paid little attention to the real source of the problem. It's frustrating because his anxiety is so severe, I don't think he could survive without meds, but I've never felt like they were the answer either...

YES!! As a matter of fact my oldest is in a study right now with UNC and Duke university regarding this very matter. OCD seems to run in this...some worse than others like obsessing that things must be a certain way or they must go a certain way. My husband has a touch of it and so I wasn't surprised when it started to show up in some of our children....some worse than others....so yes, it can occur!
