The Maximum Ride series by James Patterson is written for older children/teens but I highly recommend them for both adults and their kids! (especially if you or your kids are into science fiction/fantasy) My son has a great deal of difficulty with reading but loves stories so we are part of the Library of Congress books on tape program (for the blind and handicapped). We heard the first book in this series and we were hooked. The stories are about a group of children who have had avian DNA grafted to their own DNA as babies so that now they have wings and other "powers." Be warned: These ARE dark stories but they are very exciting and my son feels a connection to these "bird kids" because they consider themselves to be weird "mutant freaks". He often feels separated from the world because of his "weirdness" and he is excited about how the characters take on the evils of the world AND grow to understand themselves and become proud of who they are. You can check out the website www.maximumride.com. (also, if your child has difficulty with reading, look into the Library of Congress program...you can get the information and the application form on their website)
