What's Your OCD?
My son's OCD has evolved over the years and gone from an obsession with making sure the rugs were straight, to having to have all the doors in the house closed, to needing to touch his forehead to the floor, to touching his navel.....the list goes on and on.
Does anyone else deal with OCD like this? If so, what does OCD look like in your house and handle do you handle it?

Michelle does the finger clenching, and she doesn't like to be touched but she can touch you. She runs up and down the drive and has to stop in the same spot.She has a school day routine that would take forever to tell you about. At least I know now that it is a common thing with autism.

Nate can't have food touching each other...if we have chicken and pasta....two plates... if there are veggies in the pasta...he picks them out...three plates....he also doesn't like to be dirty but my hubby is that way too. Nate can't figure out why we run the dishwasher so much...he is the most responsible for it! He has his room as a mess, but if I moved anything he'd know it....things are "just so". Hubby likes all the light switches to be facing the same way...so if there is one at the end of each hall....the light is off so both switches should be down...oh geez....I tell ya it gets exhausting sometimes!

Currently we need to count the steps when we walk up or down them...in spanish. (you should see the looks I get, b/c my son is the size of a three year old and he's counting in spanish up and down the steps - people think I'm some taskmaster mom making my son memorize spanish numbers) If we miss a step we go back. I have noticed that is lessening a bit this week...I wonder what is in store for us next....

I'm not allowed to say certain things. I'm not allowed to say, "Thanks," to Daniel, but "Thank you" is fine, and "Thanks" is tolerable if I'm talking to someone else. If I mess up (or if I just say it so he'll get past it), he'll throw himself on the floor, moaning. Makes for some interesting public moments. If I ask him to say "hi" to someone, he erupts, biting his finger and roaring, thinking that I want him to say exactly what I said. After all, sometimes, he'd prefer to say, "hello" or "hola."

Oh, the adversity of the adverbs! I am so there with that, Emily. There are a lot of words (and a few phrases) that Jesse hates to hear me say. Among them are the words, "God, dead, death, sleep and go to sleep." After quite a few years of racking my brain for answers, I actually deduced it to the simple fact that when his sister Serra died of cancer in 1996 we used those words a lot. When she was so ill we said things like, "God, please help Serra" or "She just looks as if she's asleep." He associates these words I mentioned as signs of dying. It all made sense to me.

Oh boy...do we know OCD!!!! Richies is if its the way its suppose to be...it cant change. Example, if he puts something in a spot..it goes there. Video tapes....they have to be just so, even when watching them. Before he can get on the school bus...he has to rewind the tape he is watching at the moment to the special place only he knows what it is...then he takes it out...puts it in a another special place then puts a different tape in...and turns off the vcr and tv. I'm still trying to figure all the logic out on that one! LOL
And the list goes on....

Oh here's another funny one!
Clothing has to be Dry...so if his clothes get wet...they are coming Off! Swim suits you wear in the pool..but take them off when your done swimming...and you dont even have to be inside yet for that to happen.
LOL...Gotta love our Kids...Never a dull minute!

Oh, SuperMom, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Lisa, I can totally relate to the inappropriate removal of clothing! Fortunately, it's been a few years since Daniel stopped that... But one time, he got naked in church....

I have to admit that I fall prey to OCD too. I can't eat with anything but a salad fork and small spoon. I have to have my ice cream in a clear bowl with a handle that is JUST for my ice cream. I don't like to drink anything from a plastic cup and I don't want my hot soup or hot tea from a plastic bowl. Jesse has almost "outgrown" his OCD.
I think at 23 a lot of it is due to the fact that he is more aware of his own body language. I don't want to gross anyone out, but I remember when he was in elementary school he was obsessed with his underarms and was constantly "sniffing." I was SO glad when he outgrew that one. LOL

OCD in our house is nothing new, I was just shocked when the now 3 yr old turned out to have it. My husband and I both are OCD about several things and they are not the same things. From towels being folded in just a certain way to things being put away in just the right oder. Throw in an OCD 3 yr old and life can get pretty interesting. My son has to have all his cars lined up just right while playing with them and if we move them, we are in trouble! The rug thing is also part of our life here at home, rugs have to be flat with no rinkles at all, if not then they need to be removed. I guess in some ways it's kind of nice to have some sense of order, until it becomes a issue and then it can be a problem.
