HOMESCHOOLING??

Hi, My 9 yr old son seems to have fallen through the cracks of the special education system. After attending an autism retreat and learning that many parents homschool for this reason. I have begun tryin to gather information about what I would need to do. There is so much stuff out there that its hard to figure out what is the real deal..
If anyone out there can give me some advice i would greatly appriciate it

thank-you!

Re: HOMESCHOOLING??

I'd love to be able to homeschool my son at some point.  Unfortunately, he is very resistant to me teaching him anything!...I would suggest that you type in the word "homeschooling" into the search field at the top of the page and you might find the names of other members who homeschool--and then you can contact them directly.  You may also find some helpful articles.  I also think there is a homeschooling group here at FR as well...Keep us posted!

Re: HOMESCHOOLING??

Hi, Sierra!  You're right...the autism retreat helped inspire me about homeschooling.  For me it was a supportive feeling--maybe we're not so crazy after all!  For info. about homeschooling and helpful links, check out the maine government site, go to the dept. of education site and then to the homeschooling info. section.  You can also send a request to join the FoggyRock homeschooling group!-lisadianne2

Re: HOMESCHOOLING??

Just check for therapies that you are getting now from the district. In NY they legally  are only required to give about 1/4 of what you could get if you were sending your child IN district. Even kids that went to Catholic schools or alternative schools didn't get all the therapy time they originally got when they pulled their kids out of the public school system so be aware of that as well.

Re: HOMESCHOOLING??

Have you looked into curriculum yet? What is your son good at? What level is he on in school? Math you see is good for math, handwriting without tears is what we're trying.

Re: HOMESCHOOLING??

Have you thought about using a Virtual Academy to educate your child?  My boys are Juniors in High School and are using California Virtual Academy Public School Online.  It's a wonderful program using K12 curriculum that still supports your child's IEP and services.  My boys receive their services for Speech and OT still using outside agencies that the school contracts through.  You can find out if your state has these services at www.k12.com and you can visit my sons school at www.k12.com/cava/
