My 13 year old daughter is driving me over the edge (smile)

My 13 year old high functioning/bi-polar daughter, who will be 14 in October is about to drive me over the edge.  She started her period a year ago and it comes and goes.  Sometimes it is right on schedule every 28 days, and other times it is anyone's guess, currenlty we are at 38 days and counting.  She has PMS, Mood Swings, Melt downs etc.  She is as big as I am so when she has a melt down it can be physically taxing.  The last 3 to 4 months have been the worst of ever.... she hangs on you, she touches you, she is all in your face and disagrees with every thing I say, nothing seems to make her happy.  We were at the beach on vacation, if we were at the beach she wanted to be at the pool, if we were at the pool she wanted to be at the condo, if we were at the condo she wants to be at the beach... back and forth, up and down.... and now she just screams at the top of her lungs...She is also obsessed with boyfriends, marriage, making out (hugging is what she calls making out).  There is no boyfriend or anything like that nor will there be till she is 30 (smile), but she acts like I am her "mate" and she hugs on me all the time... I am at my wits end.... please anyone ... advice???

OMIGOSH....I could just HUG YOU!!!! What is it about 13 and girls???? My daughter isnt on the spectrum...but boy it can be summed up in 2 words. High Maintenance!!! And it seems like she wants everything under the sun....cant sit still either....and yet Nothing keeps her happy for more than  a few seconds. Luckily she doesnt have a boyfriend yet...but it's still that social thing too. I keep telling myself...This too will Pass...you just have to be Patient...but God Knows...I am the worst with Patience.
Anyway...I know I'm not helping you at all....but I just wanted you to know...I feel like I am in the same boat with you...and cant seem to find the right paddles.

Thanks Lisa!!!  I laughed out loud when I saw that you said you could just hug me!  Just when I think I am at the end of my rope and it must be something I am doing wrong, I come on here and read something someone else wrote that is living my life.... and I just want to hug them... so thanks for feeling my pain.

Re: My 13 year old daughter is driving me over the edge (smile)

Thirteen is a nightmare!  My 13 year old son is in the throes of puberty and has similar mood swings and whining episodes.  He also thinks about girls ALOT!  He is either telling me that he wants to hit them or touch their "tummies".....It makes me sad that his body is growing so much faster than his ability to process its changes......

As far as your daughter goes, I can tell you that for me, I have been using natural progesterone cream for 10 years.  My OBGYN recommended for me and it is a lifesaver.  I used to go through 2-3 depression every month and just want to never wake up.  Everything made me sad and I just couldn't think of anything good in my life.  It was all hormonal and the progesterone cream (made from wild yams) totally balances me out.  I have tried to go off of it and the sadness comes right back.  It might be something to talk to your daughter's doctor about.....I know that some families turn to birth control pills to help with moods and regularity, but this might be a more natural way to do the same thing.

Good luck!

Re: My 13 year old daughter is driving me over the edge (smile)

My son who is also doubly inflicted with HFA and BiPolar also had the most wild mood swings and melt downs etc...and it did align itself with puberty....ugh!!!!!! If she is on meds for the bipolar it may need to be tweaked now that her whole chemistry is changing both in her brain and everywhere else. We had to basically start over with Brian once puberty hit because he was just a different kid! Boys don't have periods but they get teary and freak out over body changes....I remember Brian coming out of the shower yelling for me. I run in there and he's standing there with a towel around him. I'm looking for blood or something and I'm saying "what's wrong" and he says "THIS!" and closes his eyes and whips the towel open to show me he is growing hair where he hadn't before. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I explained it was normal and it happens to everyone and that there will be more hair growing out of other places he wasn't expecting....it was so cute, hearbreaking, bittersweet and everything else all rolled into one. And the girl crazy thing has just expanded itself to a point that we've had to have "the talk" often just to reinforce that the wild hormonal feelings can have very real consequences.....it just never ends!  So even though I don't have girls, I FEEL ya.

LOL...your welcome...glad I could make you smile and yep...I can so relate.
What was I thinking...my kids are all in the puberty stage....and I'm finding out that puberty doesnt like me very much.
Richie is going to be 12 and is pretty much nonverbal and well he is going thru the puberty thing without the words....you all know the attitude! Which in a way is really cool because it is age appropriate...but frustrating all the same.
Shannon....I will look into that cream too....I like that Idea better than the BC.
Cause she is still so young....but I swear way more mature than I ever was at that age.

All I can say is, I have no idea how they find teachers for that age group!  Combining bipolar with new hormones, wow, that's just no fun.  Hang in there!

Re: My 13 year old daughter is driving me over the edge (smile)

My daughter is normal functioning and her mood swings drive me crazy. I think there are medications to regulate periods though, and midol helps my daugther. Also, hot tea helps calm, especially camomile. I want to be touched more while on my period and my husband works third shift, not trying to be so personal--just trying to relate. I have a warm lotion dispenser I use to sooth my dry skin and I believe it helps with the need for touch. You should be able to buy them at Walmarts. If you can teach your daugther spoiling technique's for girls on their periods, it may help. How about a warm cozy fuzzy blanket to cuddle with?

LOL...well I actually Like to work with that age group...I have to admit...boys are a little easier...but Why is it easier to be more patient when your working with someone elses child than it is your own child at times?
Maybe that is something I need to work on as a mom....trying to be more patient with my own child...and remembering this to will pass.
Stef...good point...sometimes we do forget what is was like to be young.
