Autism Podcast, your audio connection to autism...

Hi all,

Shannon wanted me to post some information about the podcast I do on autism and why I started it.

Rather than reinvent the wheel, I have pasted a press release about the podcast.

If you have suggestions or ideas for interviews, please let me know.

    PRESS RELEASE

When Michael and Lori Boll realized that their young son had autism, they did what most parents do: Freaked out!

Michael and Lori --two Master's level, certified classroom teachers-- were living in Jakarta, Indonesia.  As International School teachers they enjoyed the perks and travel that comes from working overseas.  However, their international careers, were about to take a turn.   As Michael explains “We knew that we had to head back to the USA where we could find the best treatment for our son.”

Upon their return, they took a head-first dive into researching the world of autism and the seemingly zillions of therapies, strategies, medical approaches and “magic” pills available. They followed a scenario very common to parents with a child on the autism spectrum.  As classroom teachers, they had an advantage and knew that the quicker they could start services for their son, the more progress he would make.

For a period of time Michael decided to leave the classroom all together  “After 12 years as a classroom teacher, I decided it was time to devote my energies to working with my son and learning all I could about autism.“

Along their journey, Michael, a confessed computer enthusiast (some say nerd), came up with the idea of creating a podcast about autism.  “I figured I could share what I was learning with others traveling the same journey.  Today's technology enables an individual like myself to create and produce audio content that can be distributed to anyone around the world with a computer and an Internet connection.”
Podcasting is a method of distributing audio or video content over the Internet.  Listeners can subscribe and listen via an MP3 player such as the popular Apple Ipod.  “However, at Autism Podcast, listeners can click on a link and listen to a show right from their computer” points out Michael.

Today Michael, Lori, and their two children are living and working Shanghai, China.  Michael is teaching typical kids at Concordia International School, while Lori is a program leader at Special Education Consulting Services, Shanghai.  Their son accompanies Lori to school while their typical daughter accompanies Michael.

Autism Podcast interviews some of the top experts in the field of autism as well as therapists, treatment providers, parents, and adult individuals with autism.   “By creating Autism Podcast, I have been able to interview and talk with the top experts in the autism field.  Let's be honest here, without Autism Podcast, I would likely have not been able to talk with many of these people.”

Recent interviews include Glenn Tingali, Vice President of Autism Speaks, Portia Iverson, found of The Cure Autism Now Foundation (CAN), Dr. Steven Gutstein of the RDI Connections Institute (Relationship Development Intervention), Dr. Laura Schreibman, creator of Pivotal Response Training, as well as Lori Frost and Dr. Andi Bondi, the creators of the PECS system, a popular communication device for individuals with limited speech capability.
