Ideas for Sensory Room

We're building a sensory room in the basement for our son (and our NT daughter is looking forward to it too!  After seeing all the equipment catalogs sitting around the house, she has decided that she wants to be an OT when she grows up so she can get paid to play!).....and I am wondering if there are any good books out there that might help us understand what type of equipment might be helpful for a kid with his type of sensory/physical needs.  I have the Out-of -Sync Child and the Out-of-Sync-Child Plays, and just wondering if there is any newer literature?
Thanks-
Shannon

Re: Ideas for Sensory Room

Shannon,

I just checked Amazon.com and they have a book that appears like it might be very beneficial.  Building Bridges Through Sensory Integration: Therapy for Children with Autism and Other Pervasive Developmental Disorders [ILLUSTRATED] (Spiral-bound) by Paula Aquilla (Author), Shirley Sutton (Author), Ellen Yack (Author) .  They have a lot of practical suggestions for day-to-day activities.

You might also do the same search as I did "sensory equipment autism" and the top 8 didn't even include those we're very familiar with ... the Out-of-Sync books.

Thanks, Donna.  I will see if my library can find those for me.....
If it weren't snowing here today, I might just head over to Borders myself smile

Re: Ideas for Sensory Room

Just a heads up when looking for sensory equipment, don't just look for sources related to autism...     Sometimes when "autism" is linked to the equipment it is more expensive.  Try your local walmarts and such for an exercise disk (you can put it on a chair so your child has movement while sitting to pay attention) Ikea has swings for rooms, use your imagination, crainium toys, makes a super fort builder...and so on.

Re: Ideas for Sensory Room

Hi Shannonj...We contributed to a sensory room as part of the education in training to be a Residential Care worker. Books are great, but also look at the most important resource..YOU!! You know your chold better then anyone. Think about what calms him/her. In the room at school  we had a  inflated swimming pool filled with plastic balls, a air mattress, black lights installed in the ceiling, lamps with the flbre optics coming from them. It's amazing how cheaply you can put one together.  One site that would be worth checking out is www.flaghouse.com . You will find it's referred to as a Snoezelen room.  They can be quite pricey, but it may give you ideas on things to look for.  When we were contributing to it  we found stuff at the local dollar store.  Hope this helps.   Bluenosemary

Re: Ideas for Sensory Room

I forgot!!
Baby toys - all the new "devlopmental" focused toys work great to
The vibrating teethers work great- even if they don't use it orally they might sit on it, sweeze it

The most important part - it all on his preferences
I have spent good money and they my son have the stangest reason to me for it not being right.
A really good sensory program is about them

Re: Ideas for Sensory Room

Thanks for all the great ideas!  We finished to room recently and it looks great...Unfortunately, it is in the basement and is a bit cold right now so is not being used as much as we would like.  My son's favorite piece of equipment is the hammock swing.  It swivels and can give you quite the ride.  We also filled it up with balls and bean bags as he has needs to throw and bang around.....We'll add more as we can afford it and find the need.  I appreciate additional input.
