Re: mom ca 4 chilren 3 typical 1 autistic

Hi~looks like we're in th same boat!  I also have four children but only one has autism. It is hard to have relationships with people including family because most of them just don't get it. It seems it is up to us to educate them all along while where trying to understand it ourselves. My mother doesn't understand very much about it. I had bought the book titled TEN THINGS I WISH YOU KNEW ABOUT ME. I gave it to her to read and it is helping her. I have pretty much lost most of my friends. My daughter is with me most of the time and she thinks it's all about her all the time. Therefore, making it hard to have an adult converstation with her around. I've just about given up on friends and that is one of the reasons I enjoy Foggyrock so much. Welcome and hopefully we can help each other.  Lisa

To some degree, we probably all feel the same way.  Autism can change your world so much that it can make it hard to relate to families with typical children.  There are things that happen in my home that I would never share with anyone else besides someone in the autism community because they either wouldn't believe me--or they would think I was just an incompetent parent.  So, I share here.....Glad you do too!

I, too have four children, and only the oldest is on the spectrum.  He was finally potty trained at six, so actually, I feel lucky.  It could have been so much worse.  Neither my mom nor my in-laws understood autism, but my mom was and is the most judgemental, which can be hard.  Hang in there, it sounds like your mother in-law is making strides toward understanding.  Good luck, and welcome!
