Getting your child's records every so often

08-13-08
I hightly reccomend this. This should include all notes, e-mails and DLS logs (that is the services they receive from the school). and phone call notes too.Basically everthing that has your childs name on it. Of course again you have to put this in writing requesting a time frame they have to give it to you by. They may tell you they will charge for you to make copies. Tell them they are taking monies away from you raising your child and see how that blows over with them! It will surprise you what's in their file

records

There are various binders on these children...there is a binder in the office, a binder in the classroom and then one for all other theripist involved...and they do not all contain the same information...Julian at last count had 7-9 boxes not just files...these also include his medical records...yes it is true they can charge you for the copies, stating they need to pay someone to make the copies...but in CAL. there is a code you can use that simply states that if you are charged a fee, the paying of this fee and interfer with the financial responsiblities of the parents for minor child...I have the code but it is only for CAL.

Also here they don't have just one fiel for my son , it's in many places. Even the police department told me they had a case and need to get the students file and it was in 3 diffrent places and hard to get.

FYI records and your rights...

PArents/guardians have the right to request the chance to view the child's records at any time. They can request a copy as well - but the school is not required to pay for the copy. (in other words they can charge for a copy if they want.) Deb

GETTING RECORDS

YES!! I totally agree. Get the records twice per year. once close to the beginning of school and once at the end of the school year. It will surprise you whats in there, but it also surprise you what is NOT in there. best wishes
