DAN visit, testing

08-14-08
Hi, we are seeing our DAN! tom. we have been staggering tests due to finances and was curious which test we should do next. The ones we have left are
RBC elements $272.
BodyBio EFA (fatty acids) $600.
MTHFR APOE COMT (autism panel?) $391.
NeuroScreen $244.
Basic Autism Panel (demyelination) $550.

It is so frustrating not being able to go ahead and do them all at once and more traumatizing for him having blood drawn over and over, sigh. I sure wish mainstream medicine would catch up to the times so Insurance would cover all this.

Any hoo, any input appreciated.

Thanks, Sonya

Good choices

I'm sorry I didn't see your post earlier - so busy these days - but I think you picked the two most important. You can support the most basic body processes and get those working properly, then little by little tweak it. We started with the basic urinalysis - probably similar to your autism panel. and then the heavy metals (not france). And a stool (which gave us a GREAT look at his gut). In one year - that is it. And we've been able to do a lot with just those tests. Good luck -

Testing

08-15-08
We went ahead and did the Neuroscreen (urine test) and Basic Autism Panel (neuroimmunology panel) today. Two down three to go, sigh. Unfortunately he added that he wants the france test (urine profile) for heavy metals and glutathione level test. So two down five more to go. Seems the testing will never end. He did so well and I fell horrible putting him thru all these pokes. We did get good news from the OAT he doesn't have yeast or oxalate issues. But as usual all the other results are perplexing and not indiciative of typical autism values or normal values. I said well my child is anything but typical he is very complex. It does lead me to believe we have other issues (still undergoing genetic tests, more pokes) and I am suspecting mitochondrial disorder. Research, research, research. But at least I feel like I am getting somewhere and getting closer to understanding my son's needs. I am happy to have the test results and glad to have them as a guide to know what we are doing is what he needs.

Insurance

08-14-08
Unfortunately I don't think any DAN! takes insurance because ins. co. still consider it experimental treatment. Hopefully since the Academy of Pediatrics is (supposedly) working with DAN! doctors to learn more the status may change. My DAN! is very understanding and we are doing what we can when we can, that is why we are staggering his tests, they give us a printout to submit to our ins. He also told us which tests the ins. would likely pay for and allowed us to get them done at Quest and they submitted directly to our ins.

The B12 injections have helped my son the most with his speech and self help skills, granted we still need a lot of work and not potty trained but he went from no understandable speech to using two/three word phrases and brushing his teeth, washing hands, and just being more aware of his surroundings, almost like seeing the forrest for the trees. We get speech therapy thru the school system and I take him to outpatient speech/oral motor and our ins. pays for that. I have gotten a little (very little) reimbursement for some of the tests and office visits to the DAN!, we have BC/BS ppo.

The oral B12 is not absorbed well, the patch is better (if your child will tolerate it) but the injections are best because they can add folinic acid which helps the methylation process, therefore helping reduce toxins in the body naturally.

I really thought there was no way we could afford a DAN! but so far we have been making due and I feel much better having the tests results so I know what my child needs.

Also the Autism Association has a grant program for people wanting to use DAN! but can't afford it. I think there is a link to that info. in the library section. Good luck, I hope you find one that will work with you.

Looking for a DAN! Doctor that takes insurance

08-14-08
Hey everyone,
I live here in Buffalo NY and I have been looking for a good doctor to take my Brian to. I have researched our Dan! Doctors and neither take insurance, so I am looking to do some therapies at home. Any good suggestions?? Here are Brian's aliments- non-verbal, no self help skills and not potty trained. We really would like to have the speech start to come but cannot afford our Dan's! He is 9 yrs old and has PDD/NOS
