IEE

These are usually done by professional who have nothing to do with the state or school system...anyone involved with either, will probly not even be looked at seriously, they are on the same team basically...a true IEE, is paid for by the parents, you can request re-emberssment but it will not likely happen...Some of the IEE are taken in to consideration, but if the county feels they can provide the same services they will, then it is up to the parent to go to due process and prove otherwise...The IEE's are good to get an open minded base line on your childs abilies...see this person has never seen your child or know anything about your child...and when I had ours done...I told them nothing about Julian until they had completed they evalutaion, there report was very informative and an eye opener as to Julian's hidden abilities...ours cost $1,200.00

Lots of diffrent Professionals

I would say there are many reasons. I have had a few done on my son. The information is very important to you as a parent even if the school ignores it. I waited for one for almost a year because I wanted the info. Boy did they give it to me 24 pages long worth. Sometimes it is helpful to prove a point about your child especially if you have to ever go to do procress. Also you may have to pay for the eval which is not cheap. When my son was in school and I wanted him to receive speech services I requested a Independence Eval and funny how after this he received services. This person is a school Speech teacher she was just from a diffrent district. Hope that helps to answer your question. The one I waited for for a lmost a year they didn't take in to account at all . At least they came out and changed a classroom around for the other students , so I guess in that way it helped other students YEA!! Oh the report did help me especially now that I hoomeschool.

I have not had the IEE done yet. I will ask the new doctor at UVA for that while we are there. I am making a list of things that I want to ask about while I am up there.

IEEs

Independent Educational Evaluations are your right. Schools are supposed to pay for the evaluation (unless that has changed in the most recent IDEA), but can hold a due process hearing to deny payment. They are also required to "consider" the evaluation (no matter who pays for it) - but "the school district is under no obligation to accept the results of the IEE". If, however, the parents are unhappy with this decision of the school district, they then have the right to initiate due process. At the hearing, the results of the IEE may be used as eveidence. If the results of such a hearing state that the school must follow through on the recommendaitons of the eval, the school is then legally obligated to do so. (Much of this is from M.Yell's book.)

Independence Evaluation

We had one done on Anthony last summer. The Doctor that did the evaluation recommended several recomendations that were completley ignored by the IEP team.
