summertime blues

08-21-08
Does anyone else have a garden, and is it doing as poorly as ours. Usually I am seeing green beans when I close my eyes to sleep. This year everything is just not growing or dying. I am so disappointed. I can my veggies to last the winter, this year I guess I will have to buy them. It really adds up to a nice savings if you think about the price if veggies these days.Take care, Kat.

My garden did well, briefly! The fruits are well and happy, but many of the veggies perished when we were unexpectedly out of town during a long, hot dry spell. Oh, well. The apples were tasty.

My garden did well this year. Tons of tomatoes. I had so many I ended up canning them this year. Lots of zukes & other stuff. My peppers died off. @ Frogfoot yeah your tomatoes had aphids. Insecticidal soap is really safe & gets rid of the aphids so do lady bugs which you can now buy at the gardening stores. Also, there are a couple of organic fertilizers on the mainstream market this year which is cool. I do a lot of dog pooh & yard waste composting. Well Liv & I are off to a bike ride to the farmers market to get some organic fruit. Good luck with the gardening

More garden blues

Banana peppers are easy to can. We like the sweet peppers and I use vinegar and salt and pickle them. They taste just like the Pepperoncinis that you get at the grocery store. Tomatos, You can make as salsa with peppers and onions or you can add cabbage and other veggies, whatever you have and make relish. If you like a sweet relish just use mixed pickling spice. I am really missing being busy right now. Our blackberries are just now ripe, so I will be getting busy making jam and freezing some for a friend of my Dad's. Let me Know how your garden goes.

I want to start canning and bought a book but I ended up freezing some of my tom. because they become ripe at different times and I didn't really have enough of a batch to can. How do you handle that?? Have you even canned banana peppers?

I noticed yest. that there are little tiny bugs on my tom. plant. It looks like they are eating the leaves. They look like microscopic grasshopers are those aphids? Anyway I gave it a bath in organic dish detergent and then sprinkled it the plant with cayenne pepper. Hopefully that takes care of them.

slow start

Mine had a slow start, they just wouldn't grow but I starting using my son's bath water with epsom salts to water them and now they are doing Awesome. I have banana peppers, bell peppers, jalepeno peppers and tomatoes. I swear one tom. weighs two pounds.

our garden started looking good, then all of a sudden everything stayed in a dwarfed stage...the tomatoes grew but the bottoms were burnt...it has been odd out here...we got about 30 necturines, and 60 apples, and even the roses aren't as many as last year...with the earth changing its axis, everything else changed too.

I have tomato plants as tall as I am - without one bud on them. I have pumpkin plants that are trying to take over the lawn - only two buds. I could go on, but I will spare you all the details. It seems the rain is really good for massive plant growth - but the lack of sun is really bad if you actually want veggies on those massive plants. It has been a GREAT year for berries up this way though!! (Unfortunately I dont grow any berries.) Deb
