Adaptive Behavior (Self-Help)

08-28-08
That's what we call it here for the preschool population and yes it basically covers dressing, eating, bathroom skills. I have heard mixed reviews from parents. In some schools the focus on "Adaptive Behavior" continues. For others - Kindergarten means Cognitive and that is all they focus on. Deb

Basic Life skills

Life Skills are on our IEP but right now they are much more basic than laundry --- how about zipping a jacket, pulling up (or down) his pants, dressing self, using spoon... gee when I say it out loud it sounds so daunting.... oh well

Some

Mostly they're focusing on social skills and cognitive skills, like problem-solving. Pretty much, Daniel's easy to teach concrete skills, as long as he can see WHY he needs to learn something. If I remember to tell him, "When you're a man, you'll need to do this," he'll pay attention and learn. If I don't, he's OUTTA THERE!!

I got him to start some laundry for me this morning that way. He put in the soap and the clothes while I took care of his sibs. He came out and asked me, "What do I do next?" when he got stuck at one point... Life's so much easier when they have language skills. It's so much easier to figure out what motivates them, and so, so much easier to give them instructions. Hang in there. What you're doing is hard, but so worth it. I know you know that. Just trying to encourage you!
