I have a problem, I don't always want to talk about autism, how do you get other people you know to talk about everyday stuff, just regular life...Autism used to be my life...and it stole so much, so now I am trying to avoid the subject, except when I need to be involved with the autism...But for most part I can't let it take over our lives again!!! what to do????

I like to talk about youth... And, most other do too. Like you remeber when you where a kid & you could spend hours shooting your bb gun, or burning things with a magnifying glass, & party all night in college.. he heh he.
Or, sometimes I just like messing with people in a positive way. Like just ask very personal questions. Either people love me or hate me.. I do not have autism, but I have something different about me. One time I went on a trip with a friend of mine. He said, "You are so odd". I asked him what he meant. He said, you will spend 20 mins talking to a stranger, making them laugh and divulge their secrets. Your kind of a pain in the ass if you just want to go out for a quick dinner.. Anyway, sometimes when I don't like the BS of small talk or direction is going off in a direction I don't want.. I will ask what was your fondess memory in life so far, what was your best idea, if you could go back in time where would you go? Those are my secrets.. Older people are the best the rush of life is replaced with a bit of quality. If you get them away from their ailments, aches, & such they got some great conversations. Anyway, I really just wanted to clear my mind & write some crap. Hope you found it a nice read.

What's great is that you have a lot to be excited about right now. Sounds like Julian is making great progress! But, maybe you can talk about the great trips you've been on or the sermon in church or the new ice cream shop (if there is one) that you're dying to try...
Actually, I think it's really funny that you brought this up. My husband keeps saying that we'll have a normal conversation after the kids move out!

It's sorta like going to a party where you don't know a lot of people - you just have a few practiced things you can talk about when you need to change the subject...fun things. You are probably pretty good at it. My friend has cancer and is going through the whole treatment thing. And she can't receive visitors often b/c her blood counts are low. So I call - she gives me her update...how she feels, what's going on with the docs and the treatments, her family - then she takes a deep breath and says "I'm so sick of me - what's going on with you". A perfect "let's change the topic" line if I ever heard one.... "I'm so sick of autism, what else is going on with you?"
