Homeschooling with Online School and Autism

This the boys 2nd year of homeschooling with California Virtual Academy High School and they are doing great! We love not having to rush to get ready in the mornings! School in jammies is great! lol

The boys are doing really well so far with A's and B's and the teachers are coming along lol! Some but not all of the teachers know about the boys autism. As issues arise I will point out that the boys do have autism and an IEP but I really like that the boys are treated like every other student whenever possible.

We have a great special ed coordinator this year and she's got the boys therapies going with outside agencies started at the very beginning of the year and she's also working to set Jamie up for success for completing the CAHSEE exam. (John's already passed both sections of this exam, but Jamie has refused to even take it : ( ughh!!!)

The boys have some really tough classes this year! Pre Calculus and Trigonometry, British and World Literature, Personal Finance, Biology, Government, Geometry, American Literature, Chemistry, Spanish II, Careers, and PE so Mom is getting re-educated right along with the boys lol!!!

Well I hope everyone else is having a good start to the school year as well!

New School

Monstermom,
I wish you the best with your son's new school!

What I found in our school district was there were few options and the boys really didn't fit into any of them. They were: 1. Full inclusion with aide in a high school with over 1500 students. 2. A county program with all disabilities in one classroom. 3. A lifeskills program with a certificate instead of a diploma. or 4. A continuation school where you work with an aide at your own speed and credits are earned by the amount of work that you do. (Mind you that you are not pushed by any teachers or aide to do any work because they don't want a meltdown) None of these options worked for us and being at home, where the boys learned finally that behavior will not get you out of work, with outside services is best for us.

New School

Although I considered homeschooling my son my husband and I put him in a private school for children with learning disabilities. They teach social skills, have a full time OT and counselors. It is for children with average or above average intelligence. Ratio of 6:1. My understanding is that there are very few schools like this in the country. We are going to try this. I will not rule out homeschooling if this does not work out.

Sounds like that's really working well for all of you! I give you credit-- I don't think I could homeschool Daniel! Glad to hear things are going so well.
