About Children With Autism Wandering
For years we've heard of children and adults with elopement issues wandering off, being hit by vehicles, or drowning. This is something that we in the community must continue to address. These are all our kids.
Some wonderful technology as mentioned in the article has become available and we must use it. We now have another assistant to help children with elopement behaviors - the four legged kind. Autism assistance dogs provide an extra set of eyes to watch over the individual with autism. They can accompany a child to school or adult to work during the day. They provide that extra protection while on outings with the family. Well trained in the blocking technique, assistance dogs may stop a child from exiting a building or walking out of the home. Some sound an alert. Some dogs are even taught to track. Now taught commands based on American Sign Language, these incredible dogs can even encourage communication.
Blessings Unleashed is one of a number of fine training programs working to keep our children safe. I would encourage parents to seek out these organizations to find out more.

This link will take you to information on a great program available in many areas to help families who have children with autism who wander. www.projectlifesaver.org/site/ . We have this program available in many of our local areas and the families have had excellent results when their children have wandered.

Daniel doesn't wander, but so many other people on the spectrum do. I'm going to send the links to my friends with wanderers. Thanks again for posting this!
