What to do at 14

Just wondering if anyone has any advice for a mom who's boy is now 14. He is wanting a little independence from his parents (to grow up of course). What are some ways I can help my son gain some independence?

Volunteering?

Is there a place where he can volunteer in a supervised environment? He might be able to help out at a food pantry, or depending on his skills, reshelve books at a library... If you have any friends with responsible older teenagers, like 18 or 19, he might be able to go out with them once a month or so, maybe to the movies or to go bowling or eat pizza. You might want to check out youth groups, too. Some of them can be very inclusive.
