Anyone using Katie Beckett for services? What kinds of services has it covered for you? Do you think it would cover equine therapy for instance?

I've been perched on the fence for awhile. My son is 4, so his therapy and school, plus transportation, is covered by CDS. I have found the Maine Care/Katie Beckett forms confusing because we're over income for Maine Care and need to get it based on disability -- which is judged by a person coming to visit. I am not sure an untrained person would see his needs. But we also have insurance through the state as my husband is a state employee. The coverage there is decent, as long as one has the proper referrals in place.

My problem is that once he is out of CDS jurisdiction and therapies and such fall to our medical insurance . . . and I see some services, such as case management, are nearly impossible to get without Maine Care. It seems kind of weird to me!

We are starting horseback therapy next month through CDS. I'm in the midcoast, and I know that the therapy place will search for money for scholarships if needed -- but that is something a case manager can do regardless if Maine Care covers it.

On the premiums for Katie Beckett, a child in early intervention should have that covered by CDS as well. It is supposed to be no-cost assistance through school age. Oh, and when I went to apply straight for Katie Beckett, it was a book to fill out. The paperwork is amazing.

Maine Care covers part of William's school costs (his school district covers the rest). They used to cover transportation costs, but this got cut. I have private insurance which covers his meds, but mainecare covers any co-pays on meds and doctor visits. It is also covering his current stay in the hospital. Unfortunately, we just starting have to pay premiums to continue with this coverage. The key for Katie Beckett and what DHHS doesn't tell you is that you have to apply for benefits as the child. So, I filled out the form as if I was a 4 old boy at the time. Crazy huh.
