PECS, etc

There are many ways to visuall assit children with Autism. PECS is one and, yes, this stands for the use of the pictures in actual communication, although many of us use it more loosely, it is not accurate to do so. Schedules can be made from the same pictures used in PECS - standardly those pictures come from the boardmaker system. I have seen PECS created from pictures, clipart, words and even objects. This all depends on the child's ability to understand representation. If a child does not yet understand two-dementional drawings, then he or she is not likely to understand PECS that are made from Boardmaker. Try some photos. If he or she does not understand that a photo is representational, you may have to use objects. For example, if a child like goldfish you could use a hand-drawn orange fish. If, however, this is not understood, try a photograph of goldfish. If this, does not work, put a few goldfish in a container and superglue it shut. Once you know you have the representation that makes sense, you can start to teach the communication. Good luck! Deb

I have found for my son that phots are his favorite. Wal-mart has a great size for only .28$ and you can pick any 4 on one sheet. We also use boadmaker pictures , but like most kids they have there favorites. Sometimes according to the PECS training it takes a child 2 years to learn well a new communitation system. I would not stand by that. But that is what they said at the training. Hope that helps.
Visual Schedule

I use to think that a visual schedule was PECS but it's pretty much not. PECS is picture exchange communation system. The child gives you a card for a desired item. Or can even be saying I smell, I see not just I want. My son is just I want still. This also has 6 phases to the program By Dr. Andy Bondy.

In a discussion regarding PECS, one member suggested that I post a related comment here. PixWriter is a software program where words typed are matched with a picture so that writing can be easily supported with pictures. Also, Co:Writer is a predictive writing program that uses auditory feedback and visual highlighing.

My sons school uses PECs to make a visual schedule that guides him through his day. Every morning he goes in and checks his schedule and take the 1st pec card to the correct matching station and does that activity. They even include bathroom and bus pick up in it. Its worked well for him and we are going to implement it at home soon. We have not really gotten it down as a communication to yet though ...

I'm hopeing that it will help our little boy, the nursery he was at got him to exchange a card for a desired treat. I don't think he really gets discriminating between symbols yet as he doesn't really look at the cards, but we live in hop that he will progress now he has started in a school where everything is visually supported.
