I'm curious to see who is taking what supplements and how you get your child to take them. I actually have a chart going so I can cross things off as we administer them to our son. That way we won't double up. He started on December 10, 2007.
James is so far on:
-GFCF Diet
-B12 injections w/numb. cream
-Super Nu thera vitamin
-Calcium
-Isogest Enzyme
-UltraFlora Probiotic
-Mineral supplement (during chelation)
-Zinc
-DMG
-Recancostat
-Primrose Oil
-Nordic Cod liver oil
-DMPS chelation 2x/wk for month
We usually give him Cod Liver Oil, Zinc, and DMG with a spoon. For the rest of the suppies (as we call them here in our house) we make 2 mixes a day. Each mix has 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of OJ and we open up the pills and put them in there. Throughout the day, we give him shots of the mix with one of those plastic spoons that they give you at the pharmacy to administer medicine. He usually does 5 *2Tsp. shots maybe 5 times a day or until all the mix is gone.
It took lots of trial and error to figure out the best way to give him soooo many foul tasting suppies. I always feel so guilty when he takes them.
I know it's what's best for him, but I still hate doing it.

DANs don't HAVE to use Kirkman, but I will say that Kirkman seems to be much less expensive than, say, Klaire - which is a fav of our DAN. Even though he has a fav, he doesn't push unless he feels one supp is better than another.
Minerals and teeth - yayarocks - I believe to get the constipation under control it was a multi thing: sceretin transdermal (pancreatic dysfunction), b vitamins, espsom baths, probiotic. Although the best was when he was recently on antibiotics and now that we are finished - I'm seeing a trend to constipation again. Sigh --- you think you've got it figured out and then - BAM they throw you for a loop. Our Zinc is a basic capsule and I use half (Country life maxi zinc - 100mb - I use half a capsule).
Kirkman has some great kid friendly stuff that is legal for our sensitive kids.

James also is a light sleeper. He would never allow me to move him for the B12 shot. We do it while he's awake. He knows that first he gets the "no ouchy cream" then it's the shot. After the shot he gets an icepop. So that seems to help.
James we started him on only the GFCF diet then introduced things one week at a time.
I've noticed that there are other supps. that aren't Kirkman brand. Does anyone know if they are less expensive. I thought that all DAN! drs. had to use Kirkman brand.
By the way... the zinc we give is in a liquid form and actually tastes pretty good. That's one of the ones that he knows tastes yummy. He'll read the bottle and say "zinc! yummy!"

My son recently started the teeth clicking and grinding thing, it is horrible, Maybe it is our multi cuz it also contains minerals. What did you use to get constipation under control?? And what kind of zinc are you using. We are also lucky as my ds loves sweet medicine from a dropper and will even take it from a spoon if it doesn't taste bad.

We started with a fatty acid supplement (that we change alot) and now use a mix that is high in EFA but also has DHA. This is for language. We also do high Vit E - for language. It has worked like a dream, but son is severely apraxic - but now he is at least 'working' on speech. We started with a DAN in Aug 07 and we add one supplement at a time - give it two weeks and if no adverse reaction occurs we keep it.
Currently we do:
vit c
Probiotic
carnitine
coenzyme q10
DPPiV enzyme
Cod liver oil
Klaire multivitamin
folinic acid
zinc
With the supps I'm lucky because my son will take anything as "medicine" in an oral sryinge. That said - I have to mix it with something tolerable (juice with some stevia sweetener sometimes). He also usually is taking claritin or a decongestant and those hide a lot of the bad tastes b/c they are so sweet and flavored.
We also do Epsom baths and Secretin transdermally (when he's asleep). Pretty regular use of GSE and OLE as well for yeast and viral issues. (boy, this IS a lot - didn't realize it until now).
All supps have worked out giving them at night - we do not do high does b12 (yet). We probably will move a second dose to the morning (mainly mito cocktail stuff) but it's so hectic in the a.m.....
We recently got his stomach cleared up from terrible constipation/unformed BMs. Now we feel that we are ready to move onto chelation.
If you noticed we are missing a mineral supp - we had to remove a Klaire min supp b/c it created OCD issues and teeth grinding. We think it might be the iron. We are about to reintroduce another Klaire multi min without iron.
We get our secretin through Lee Silsby compounding pharm. I noticed on their website that they have a transdermal vitamin B complex that is transdermal. I was thinking of trying that b/c that is the one supp that just tastes HORRIBLE and makes him gag and is going to ruin everything. If I do try it - I'll let you know how it goes.
We wanted to get to the chelation a lot quicker - but we are being slow and steady and trying to just do one thing at a time in order to know what is/is not working. It's taken us this long to just get 80% of the supps worked out. I'm sure chelation will change everything.

I meant we are just starting with the supplements. The things he is already taking we did one at a time over a few months. We cannot give the B12 while he is a sleep, he is a extremely light sleeper and a bear (like his dad) if you wake him up. He does great with the numb cream, had issues at first trying to use a bandaid but learned to use saran wrap instead to keep the cream on. I had my ped. order the cream so my ins. pays for that. I know the questions were probably directed at yayarocks but wanted to give my input.

Do you feel like that is alot to start out with? I was wondering how do you know which "product" is working? When do you give him the B-12? If you giv eit at nite when he is alseep he won't feel it . the needle is so small the butt works better then the arm too. This way the numb cream is one less thing you have to buy.Have you tryed smoothies? How is the GFCF working for you?
