TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS
Here's an early look at what we are working on for tonight's broadcast ...
Hi everyone,
Harry Smith here, filling in tonight for Katie Couric.
Today was a difficult day for several American manufacturers. About 1 million Simplicity and Graco cribs are being recalled after three children became entrapped in them and died of suffocation. Sandra Hughes has details on the dangers.
Plus, there's been a new development in the causes behind Mattel's massive recall of toys this summer. The American company originally blamed shoddy Chinese workmanship, but Barry Petersen reports on the toymaker's stunning announcement today that most of the problems actually came from faulty American designs.
Some of the hard-learned lessons of the Virginia Tech shooting were put into practice today. Officials put a college campus on lockdown after two students were shot and wounded, one seriously, at Delaware State University. Thalia Assuras has more.
As General Motors and the United Auto Workers slogged through their seventh day of contract talks, things remained tense in the GM factory town of Janesville, Wis. Dean Reynolds looks at the challenges facing Janesville and all the other struggling cities that have hitched their star to the faltering American car.
Finally, six years ago, a man made a promise: he wouldn't take off his patriotic tie until the U.S. government caught Osama bin Laden. In the latest installment of Assignment America, Steve Hartman checks in with the wearer of a very tattered tie.
I hope you'll join us!
Harry
