Acceptance

Why is it when you say that you've accepted your child's/children autism that people think you have given up?

We are still striving to be the most that we can be, just not out searching for a cure for autism.

it is all in the interpretation...

It depends what is meant by acceptance. A lot of times it is used to mean I've accepted it and am not going to do anything else--I've given up or I'm afraid or ..?. Other times it means I've accepted it and I am going to keep looking for methods to get my child back. It is the same with the use of the word cure. Why do people think if I want to cure my son that means I want to change who he is? My use of the word cure means heal his physical illness. The same thing I would do if he had cancer or diabetes.

GIVING UP

When people say they accept their childs autism, it usually means that they are fine with the way their child is...There is an actual group on-line who do not want to change their child...they accept them the way they are and expect everyone to except them too...So we learn to handle the autism, but we are still looking and will continue to look for a cure...So as for our family, I know we will never stop looking, not as long as I am living.

Daniel keeps progressing, and I'm doing all I can to help him along. I want him to have a full life, with work, hobbies, friends, and hopefully a girlfriend. But, it's liberating not to blame anyone or search for a "cure." We just progress from where we are without worrying too much about how we got here.

Because

In most cases when a person says that it means just that. But Autism is a battle that is continous we cant cant give
