Do you think your child's teacher/teachers really get autism? Are they trained to deal with autism?

I haven't had much dealing with teachers trained to work with autistic kids. Mitchell was in a preschool this past year (they just ended), he was the only ASD kid in his class of 10. I was hoping he'd get into the spec. ed. 4 year old class next year, but I've been going round and round with the school at the IEP meetings, and probably he'll end up going to a private pre-K unless we get an official dx over the summer. Owen has been in the infants and toddlers program, and is going into the 3 year old sped class next fall, so it will be my first dealing with teachers in the school environment. ;)

The boys had great teachers till they hit High School. Since both the boys are diploma bound we were dealing with a lot of General Ed teachers. Both boys had 6 different teachers and an aide. Very few of the reg ed teachers had any autism training and it caused a lot of confusion and stress for the boys! So we ended up pulling them out of the High School (Oh yeah there's over 5000 kids at this High School) and Homeschooling them thru California Virtual Academy online public school. This option has worked out great for us!

Right now his teacher is especially trained in Autism and is a ABA therapist. But he is in an Autism class room.

Daniel's teachers this year have been incredible. All of them have been well-trained and relaxed. A while back, after his IEP, I wrote a post saying that I wished I could clone them and send them around the country. Here's to hoping that next year's crop will be so good.
