How long did it take for you when you suspected ASD to get an appointment for a specialist?

It didn't take us long to get into the dev clinic because I told them I would pay out of pocket (no need to get prior auth from the insurance). It took less than 1 week and the insurance was billed and paid. My out of pocket was zero. The initial appointment with our main DAN doctor was about a 6 month wait. It was ok because we had to travel so it worked f or us.

We're waiting on an appt. with Kennedy Krieger, so I'm guessing they'll be familiar with hyperlexia. :o) I agree, the waiting is hard, especially as with Mitchell I'm having a go-round with the school system over his IEP. The sooner we get a dx the sooner we can get APPROPRIATE education in place.

About six months after my ped. finally did the referral. The waiting is really hard and don't be surprised if they don't know what hyperlexia is.

Once we figured it out that something was a little different, we called and was put on a waiting list for 1 year. I was really nervous and wanted to get in sooner or course. The dr's office called 5 months later and we had an appt. I was soooo excited.

It took a while

It took a pretty short time to see the incompetent psychiatrist, and a few months to see the wonderful, incredible pediatric neurologist. I'd love it if it were really easy to get in to see someone great, but my guess is that the really good ones have long waiting lists for a reason-- lots of people love them.

With us being military at the time it didn't take too long, once we suspected it to be autism.
