SPEAKERS:
Jed Baker, Ph.D : "No More Meltdowns: Managing and Preventing
Challenging
Behavior Through Supports and So-cial Skills Training"
Dr. Baker is currently the Director of the Social Skills Training
Project in
Maplewood, New Jersey. Their organization provides assessments and
interventions
for school-aged children that have social skills difficulties and/or
behav-ioral
problems. Dr Baker has been a clinical psychologist since 1992. He is
on the
professional advisory board of The Aspergers Syndrome Education
Network and is
also a behavioral consultant for several New Jersey school sys-tems.
In
addition, Dr. Baker writes, lectures, and provides training across
the country
on the topic of social skills training for individuals on the autism
spectrum.
Dr. Bakers has written award winning publications including "The
Social Skills
Picture Book", "Preparing for Life", and "No More Meltdowns"
Dennis Debbaudt: "Keeping Your Child Safe"
Mr. Debbaudt is a law enforcement trainer who, in 1994, wrote the
ground-breaking booklet "Avoiding Unfortunate Situations", the first
publication
to look at the interactions between children and adults with autism
and law
en-forcement professionals. He has since written frequently on the
topic,
including the book " Autism, Advocates and Law Enforcement
Professionals:
Recognizing and Reducing Risk Situations for People with Autism
Spectrum
Disor-ders", articles for the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, and
Sheriff
Magazine. He presents to law enforcement agen-cies in the United
States, Canada,
and United Kingdom. His materials are in use by police departments
around the
world.
Katie Wright: "Our Journey with Autism"
Ms. Wright is the mother of two boys , Mattias and Christian.
Christian was
diagnosed with autism at 2 1/2 years old. Ms. Wright is now dedicated
to
improving the lives of children and families affected by autism. She
is the
daughter of Bob and Suzanne Wright, founders of Autism Speaks.
June Groden, Ph.D: "The Impact of Stress and Anxeity on Individuals
with Autism
and Developmental Disabilities"
Dr. Groden is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Groden
Center, a
school and residential treatment center in Rhode Island. The Center is
recognized internationally for it¢s pioneering work with individuals
on the
autism spectrum. Over 30 years services have expanded through four
corporations
in Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Dr. Groden serves on the clinical
faculty of
the University of Rhode Island and is a visiting lecturer at the
Center for the
Study of Human Development at Brown University. She maintains a
private practice
and is a consultant to school systems and other institutions. She
serves on the
Panel of Professional Advisors of the Autism Society of America.
Philip Smith, Ph.D: "Overview of Various Approaches for Skill
Building & Symptom
Management: Biomedical Op-tions, Teaching Strategies & Replacement
Skills"
Dr. Smith is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The Elizabeth M.
Boggs
Center on Developmental
Disabilities, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New
Jersey/Robert Wood
Johnson Medical School (UMDNJ). He
has also taught courses in autism, research methods, and counseling
at Hunter
College (NYC) and the Alliance Graduate School of Counseling (Nyack,
NY). Dr.
Smith has worked extensively with families, schools, and other
programs across
the region to provide training and technical assistance regarding
effective
approaches to behavior intervention and educational programming for
children
with autism.
