Researchers at the University of Missouri are joining a national effort to find out why some children have autism even though no member of their extended family suffers from the disorder.
The research at Missouri's Thompson Center for Autism and 12 other schools around the country will be funded by a $1.6 million grant from The Simons Foundation. The schools will take DNA samples from a total of 3,000 families, with Missouri asked to find and test 100 families a year. Children to be tested must be between 5 and 17.
