A groundbreaking study that sheds new light on the genetic component of autism was co-authored by an Auburn High School graduate who first got interested in the disorder as a teenage volunteer in Rockford.

Lauren Weiss was the lead junior author of the study, published Jan. 9 in the New England Journal of Medicine. The daughter of teacher Ginette Weiss and Dr. Sheldon Weiss, she now works as a Harvard University researcher through Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston
