Summary Statement:

Autism Awareness has been hurt and is off the Kentucky Derby trail, but Johnny Taboada insists his horse is meant to do something really special. He figures that minor knee surgery cannot stop his mission: to bring attention to autism, the disorder that affects his 8-year-old son, Renzo, and millions of others, through the colt’s exploits.

Considering his injury and modest pedigree, Autism Awareness may have trouble winning any big races down the road, but he seems to have a way of overcoming the odds. He cost $1,000 at a 2006 yearling sale and lost his first 12 races, yet won the El Camino Real Derby on March 8 at Bay Meadows outside San Francisco at odds of 62-1. The victory in the $150,000 stakes race vaulted him into the Kentucky Derby picture, but he has been sidelined after surgery for a chip in his left knee March 15.
