First, getting a consistent diagnosis is difficult. What CNN calls "autism" is actually a range of five autism spectrum disorders, which are autistic disorder, Rett syndrome, child disintegrative disorder, Asperger's syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified, according to WSU psychology professor Brett Parmenter. If a child's symptoms overlap in two disorders, it is hard to know which treatment to prescribe.
Money is also an issue. Parents often can't afford to attain multiple diagnoses, provide a specialized diet or buy all the medications prescribed to their children. It's hard enough to sacrifice the extra time it takes to raise a child with special needs and still earn a decent living. The U.S. government provides billions of dollars in aid each year to victims of ASDs, and expectations for the next president-elect to support such programs are high.
